Home Thursday, April 16, 2009 Hazel Marie [Bruce] Jackson Hazel Marie [Bruce] Jackson was born January 15, 1909 in Verden, Oklahoma to Clifford Breckenridge Bruce and Essie Jane [Paul] Bruce. She came from a family of 3 boys and 5 girls. In 1951 Hazel married local farmer, J. M. Jackson. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Joana James, grandson Kevin Gullette, great-grandchildren Heather Gullette, and Kyle Gullette. She is also survived by step-children Topper Jackson, Janet Pipkin; step-grandchildren Jennifer Scott, J. Todd Jackson, Mark Jackson, Kent Jackson, Ladd Jackson, Allison Baughman, Erin Atchley, and numerous step great-grandchildren. Hazel graduated from Verden High School in 1926 and moved to Oklahoma City to attend the Success Beauty School and work at Oklahoma Beauty Supply. From there she returned to Anadarko and worked in the Palace Beauty Shop. In 1928 Hazel opened her own beauty shop in her home on West Central, where she cut, "twisted," and permed hair for the next thirty-seven years. During those years she made many dear friends and some of her customers would travel 50 miles just for Hazel to do their hair. She retired from the beauty shop in 1975, but continued to be very active by traveling worldwide, and maintaining rental properties she accumulated over the years. Hazel was an active member of Anadarko First Christian Church for 67 years, and served as Sunday School Superintendent as well as a Sunday School teacher. She held a perfect attendance record for many years and was honored by the church when named Deaconess Emeritus. Hazel was also active in the First Christian Church of Mountain View where J. M. served as pastor for 12 years. Hazel is preceded in death by husband J. M. Jackson, stepson Jerry Don Jackson, and siblings, Gilbert Paul Bruce, Naomie Lee Bruce Soles, Leona Bruce, Russell Bruce, Ray Bruce, Ruby Aleen Bruce Sanford, and Alice Bruce. On Easter Sunday morning, Hazel met her savior with the same grace and dignity she exemplified in life Services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, April 17th at the First Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Richard Cox, with burial in Memory Lane Cemetery, under the direction of Steverson Funeral Home. |
