Tuesday, September 21, 2010 John Earl Dawes CHICKASHA - Long time Oklahoma Vo-Ag teacher John Earl Dawes age 87 passed away on September 18, 2010. John was born March 23, 1923 in Hastings, Oklahoma. His parents were Earl and Emma (Smith) Dawes. Due to his mother passing away when "little Earl" was only five he was raised by a host of grandparents, aunts and uncles from both the Smith and Dawes families. He attended high school in Cyril and Carnegie graduating from Carnegie High School in 1942. John met his beautiful wife "Blonde" Doris McNabb at Carnegie and they were united in marriage August 27, 1943. Like most young men of his age John joined the military during WWII. He was a member of the United States Navy and served in the Pacific with the Naval Air force as a flight mechanic. John and Doris returned to Oklahoma after the war and made their home in Stillwater as John attended Oklahoma A&M to study agriculture. He graduated in 1949 with honors and was invited to join an Honors Fraternity. OAM President Dr. Henry Bennett paid for his dues personally as John couldn't afford the ten dollar fee. John taught Vo-Ag for 32 years in the communities of Cashion, Anadarko, Carnegie and Pauls Valley. He started the first Vo-Ag program at Cashion. At all of the schools he taught he was known for excellence in the classroom, discipline and award winning programs in livestock and judging teams. More importantly, he left behind a legacy of mentoring young men helping them start their careers teaching integrity, service and hard work. Many remained in contact with John his entire life and even at the very end of his life former students from Anadarko, Carnegie and Cashion came to pay their respect to "Mr. Dawes" their Ag teacher. In 2005 he was the recipient of Oklahoma Ag Teacher Hall of Fame from the Oklahoma Career Tech during the Vo- Ag teacher's summer conference. John retired from teaching in 1981 and he and Doris enjoyed their retirement traveling with friends to South Texas and other places across the United States. John remained active in the community assisting with Vo-Ag programs in Caddo County. He was a devout Christian, a member of the Church of Christ teaching Bible class for over 60 years and served as a leader and an elder. He also was active in the Lions club since 1955 and served as President and was given the Melvin Jones Fellow for life service. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Francis and Evelyn, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles who helped raise him and many dear friends. He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years Doris of the home. Son, Richard (Jackie) Dawes, Bethany, Debbie Hawpe, Anadarko, Katy Dawes, Anadarko and Mike Dawes. Trophy Club, Texas. Eight grand children, Marty (Melissa) McPherson, Anadarko, Andy (Andrea) McPherson of Weatherford, Mendy (Lance) Zerger of Amarillo, Texas; Mandy Hawpe of Anadarko, Glenna (Bruce) Burdick of Weatherford; Anji (Roger) Ison, O'Fallon, IL; Joanna Bowzer, New York, NY; Sammy Dawes, Denton, Texas and 11 great grandchildren. John also leaves behind nephews Gene Lemons, Oklahoma City, Steve (Tracy) Mize of Santa, Ana, Ca, and cousins Jack (Betty) Dawes, Oklahoma City, Robert(Betsy) Smith, Charlotte, Texas . Memorial Service will be held Saturday September 25th at 2PM at the Anadarko High School Auditorium, 1400 Warrior Drive Anadarko, OK 73005. Burial will follow in Memory Lane Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to the Tipton's Children Home, Tipton, Ok or to the John Dawes Memorial Scholarship Fund, Box 674 Anadarko, Ok 73005. Steverson Funeral Home, Anadarko, Ok will be charge of the arrangements. Viewing at the funeral home will be Wednesday, from 9 am until 5 pm, Thursday, 9 am until 5 pm, Friday from 9 am until 9 pm, and Saturday, from 9 am until 11 am. |
