Donald Lee Wright
April 26, 1935 ~ December 28, 2022

Donald Lee Wright was born April 26, 1935, to Leroy W. Wright and Hazel L. [Riddle] Wright, in Lookeba, Oklahoma, and transitioned to his heavenly home on December 28, 2022, in Enid, Oklahoma, joining his Lord and Savior and many other friends and family gone on before.

Services will be Monday, January 2, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Anadarko. Cremation services were provided under the kind guidance of Amy Stittsworth Funeral Services, Enid, Oklahoma.

Don spent his childhood years exploring Sugar Creek with friends. He had many adventures with his horse, his dog, and his best friend, Ronald Gray.

He did not have an easy life, but he had a good life. His father took him on adventures a young boy should probably never have been a part of, and he worked in his mother’s café. He enjoyed playing sports, particularly basketball.

A young girl from Oney, Oklahoma, caught his eye in high school. He was not allowed to date her unless he went to church with her. He went to the Oney revival with her, where he accepted Christ on a Friday night and surrendered to preach the next evening. He was ordained to the gospel ministry by Oney Baptist Church on June 3, 1953.

Don married Betty Ann Mason June 14, 1953.

He attended a semester at OBU before transferring to Southwestern State College.

Betty Ann worked to help put Don through college as they began to grow their family. Vicki Lynn was born December 26, 1954, followed by Terry Mason July 28, 1958, and Dawn Ann April 5, 1961.

During this time, Don pastored on the weekends at rural churches and began his teaching career at Shidler Elementary in Oklahoma City. Shortly after the birth of their last daughter, they moved to the Mason home, where he began teaching at Oney Public Schools and Betty Ann was a beautician. These were some of the most fulfilling days of Don’s career, as many of his former students still kept in touch with Mr. Wright regularly, sharing stories of “back in the day”.

He was an encourager to many students who needed an extra “push” and he bragged about his former students all the time while also repeating humorous stories about many of them.

Don obtained his Masters Degree from OSU and became high school principal, then superintendent of Oney Public Schools.

Don was called to be the pastor at Midway Baptist Church in Cyril, Oklahoma, on March 26, 1966. He served this church faithfully for 47 years, only retiring after he was diagnosed with CML and was physically unable to continue.

Betty Ann passed away March 6, 2006.

Don married long-time church member and widow, Roberta Trogdon-Meeler, on May 20, 2006. They continued to serve together at Midway Baptist Church until his retirement. With this marriage, Don gained a step-daughter, Pam, and step-son, Keith, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donald was a pillar in the Oney community and Caddo County. He served on the Caddo Electric Cooperative board of directors for 38 years.

He performed many marriage ceremonies and funerals in the area. He always bragged his funeral success rate was 100 percent, whereas his marriage success rate was not quite as high.

Don was a man of God and of great principle and exhibited the gifts of mercy, grace, and giving. You would be hard pressed to find anyone that could say a negative word about him. Whether you knew him as Donald Lee, Bro. Don, Mr. Wright, Dad, or Grandad, you always knew he loved you and wanted the best for you.

Don was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Betty Ann; his wife of 16 years, Roberta; his brother-in-law, Bob Spear; and his half-sister Kathy Wright.

He is survived by his best friend, sister, and No. 1 fan, Imogene Spear, Anadarko; half-sister, Trenna Shotts, Binger; step-brother, Terry Winchester, Beaumont, Texas. He is also survived by his children, Vicki of rural Ft. Cobb; Terry [Sharon] of rural Ft. Cobb; Dawn Ann [David] of Enid; step-daughter Pam [Mark] of Elgin; and step-son Keith [Nancy] of Anadarko, as well as four biological grandchildren, Jay Mendenhall, “Little” Don Wright, Maggie Mendenhall, and Mylissia Wright; and five step-grandchildren, John Paul Trogdon, Dusty Deevers, Brandon Trogdon, Rob Deevers, Chelsey Holloway, and 32 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by special cousin Benny Sisson, niece Patty Maple, and Uncle Al Wright, as well as a host of friends and other nieces and nephews.
