May 28, 2013 Bernice [Gustin] Hawkins Cindle Priest Willcox Brines Bernice (Gustin) Hawkins, Cindle, Priest, Willcox, Brines of Apache, Oklahoma was born July 6, 1926 to Herbert and Myrtle Gustin at Broxton, OK. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 28, 2013 in Lawton, OK. She attended Broxton School. She married Oliver Hawkins on July 2, 1941. After all eight of her children were out of high school (and some out of college), she went back to school and completed her GED. She married Charlie Cindle on Jan 7, 1972. They moved to Apache in 1976 to help take care of her parents, H.W. & Myrtle Gustin. She married Clarence Priest on October 1, 1988. On October 1, 2010 she married Eddie Brines. Over the years, Bernice has been very active in her local community. She was a member of the Apache Historical Society, the GFWC Apache Study Club and volunteered at the Apache Senior Nutrition Center since it opened in 1977. Bernice recently joined the Caddo County Home Extension Club. She had a lot of fun participating in events in Apache and has received many honors, including Apache Rattlesnake Queen, Apache Grungy Queen in the Apache Fair parade, won the Husband Calling contest at the Festival of the West and won numerous ribbons for canning at the fair. She was especially known for her apple butter. She also helped at the 4th of July Celebrations. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Apache (Pew #6) and the Sanctuary Sunday School class. She has helped at numerous Pow Wows and enjoyed being with her many Native American friends. Bernice also was very active in southwest Oklahoma. She served as a Silver Haired Legislator from 1988-1992, was on ASCOG's AAA Board Advisory Council, was named ASCOG's Outstanding Older American in 1990 and served on the Alliance of Aging since 1988. One of her greatest joys was being Mrs. Santa. She began playing the role of Mrs. Claus in 1989 and went to schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, hospitals, Ft. Sill co-parties, the Central Mall Christmas opening in Lawton and the Salvation Army Angel Tree at the mall. She could be seen at the Apache holiday promotions handing out candy and apples and she presided over the Apache Christmas Parade along with her Santa for many years. She is preceded in death by her husbands Oliver N. Hawkins, Charles Cindle, Clarence Priest, and Jim Willcox, her parents, Herbert & Myrtle Gustin, 5 brothers: Noel, Doyle, Raymond, Dean and Lloyd Gustin; 6 sisters: Lorene Weathers, Alta Faye Jones, Almeda Rath, Lois Guy, Maudie Belle Smith, Noma Jean Evans, 2 daughters Brenda Renfrow Bogle, Nancy Hawkins and 1 son, Larry Hawkins. She is survived by husband, Eddie Brines; daughter and son-in law, Barbara and David Moore; sons and daughter-in-law Michael Hawkins, Errol Hawkins, Marshall Hawkins and Doug and Linda Hawkins; brothers, Melvin Gustin and Wendell Gustin; 26 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grand children. She also had stepchildren: Patra Priest, Darryl and Melinda Willcox, Ken and Gloria Wright ,Valjean and Jerry Wheeler, Barbara Lumbert, and Robert Brines and a host of other adopted relatives and friends. Services will be at held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 1:30 pm at Apache First Baptist Church with Reverend Rue Scott officiating and assisted by Reverend Travis Wollenburg. Burial will follow at Ft. Cobb Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Apache First Baptist Church or Apache Senior Citizens Center. |
