Weston Winfred Hicks
February 12, 1922 ~ March 13, 2021

Weston Winfred Hicks was born on February 12, 1922 on a farm west of Apache, Oklahoma to Joseph Owen Hicks and Ludia Viola [Smith] Hicks. He passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2021 in Denton, Texas.

He attended elementary school at Boone and then attended Apache High School. He played basketball during those years and was active in the first FFA program that Apache had added to their curriculum.

When he graduated from high school, he went to Aircraft School in Wichita, Kansas. He went to California to work for North American Aircraft until he returned to Apache to help on the farm. His brother, Arthur, was drafted into the Army and he was needed to help operate the farm with his father.

He married his high school sweetheart, Glada Maureen Bridges, on April 18, 1943, expecting to be drafted any day, but on the way to the wedding he stopped to pick up the mail at the post office, as there was no rural route delivery and found that he was re-classified.

Glada did not know this until they left for their honeymoon. She was working in Oklahoma City and, of course, quit her job and they moved into an apartment in Apache. They later moved to the farm until the draft for all farmers came.

He took Basic Training in the Infantry at Camp Wolters, in Mineral Wells, Texas. He was in final training when the Atomic Bombs were dropped in Japan. He was on a troop ship going to Japan when the truce was signed. He was a Military Policeman in Tokyo during his tour of duty there, and many times served guarding General McArthur.

When he returned home, he went to work for Currell Lumber Company in Tucumcari, New Mexico. His brother-in-law was manager of the lumber yard there. He was transferred to Lawton, Oklahoma and worked there until he was sent to Drumright to manage the Currell Lumber Yard there. When the Drumright store was sold, he was moved to Broken Arrow as the assistant manager there. Another move took him back to Lawton to the Currell Lumber Yard. He decided that he wanted to change his occupation and went to work for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.

He worked for Metropolitan nearly 30 years. During those years, he and Glada had four children – Kent Weston, Randy Owen, Marc Branson, and finally a daughter, Lisa Ann. They lived in Lawton until he decided to take early retirement.

When his parents were gone, he had the farm at Apache to take care of and he bought it in the settlement of their estate. The early retirement from Metropolitan gave him a change to move back to the farm. They built a new house there, but kept the "cobblestone" house that was built in 1937. The "cobblestones" were hauled there by Alvis Belcher from the Medicine Park area where there are also many buildings made of them.

His hours in the gardens, planting a pecan orchard, and fishing Cache Creek were some of his happiest memories.

He played golf many years and it was his favorite place to unwind. He was a good golfer – just ask Clinton Parmer who was his favorite playing partner. Fort Cobb was a regular and Betty and Glada joined them for many games.

He and Glada spent 25 years of winters in the Valley of Texas at McAllen and some time in Colorado in the summer.

It was finally time to move to Denton, Texas to be near their daughter. Betty and Clint bought the farm, which meant that it stayed in the family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Marc Branson Hicks, sister, brothers, aunts and uncles.

Weston is survived by his wife of 76 years, Glada; children: Kent Weston Hicks, Randy Owen and spouse Signe Hicks, Lisa Ann and spouse Thomas R. Hall; grandchildren: George Weston Hicks, Angela Hicks Willingham, Shawn Christopher Hicks, Amy Hicks Duncan, Branson Hicks, Callie Hicks, T.J. Hall, Robert Weston; 12 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, at Fairview Cemetery in Apache with Rev. Lory Fahle officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crews Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Apache.
