© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, July 20, 1955 December 17, 1872 ~ July 16, 1955 Hemming Service In Apache Church Monday Morning Final rites were in Apache Monday for Joseph Lawrence Hemming, 82, for more than 50 years a resident of the Broxton and Alden communities. he died Saturday, July 16 in a Carnegie hospital after being in ill health for a number of years. Rosary services were in the Crews funeral chapel, Apache, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, with mass at 9 a.m. Monday in the Mother of Sorrow Catholic church, Father John Caefi officiating at both services. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery near Apache, under direction of Crews Funeral Home. Hemming was born in Freemont county, Iowa, December 17, 1872. He came to Lincoln county, Okla., from Kansas in 1892 and to Caddo county in February, 1902. He and his brother, George, farmed in the Broxton community until 1930 when he and his family moved to the Alden community. He retired in 1939 due to ill health. He was a member of the original school board when the Broxton school was organized, and was a member of the Mother of Sorrow Catholic church, Apache. He was married to Ida Helen Nocker in April, 1917 in San Antonio, Texas and to them seven children were born. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. J.L. Hemming at the home; two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Shepard, San Antonio and Mrs. Mary Douchensky, Charleston, West Va., and five sons, George, San Antonio; and Herbert, John L. James and Edward, all of Apache. Also surviving is his brother, George Hemming, of Broxton; and nine grandchildren. |
Anadarko, Oklahoma November 1967 August 17, 1880 ~ November 24, 1967 George A Hemming was born August 17, 1880, in Iowa. He came to the Apache area in 1902 from Stroud, settling in the Broxton area where he farmed until retiring in 1964. He moved to Apache and for the past few months he and his wife had been residents at the Silvercrest Manor retirement home in Anadarko. He Married Agnes Healey on April 23, 1930, at San Antonio, TX. He was a member of the Apache Mother of Sorrows Catholic church. He was an uncle of Herbert and Edward Hemming of Apache, James of Carnegie, John of Elgin and George of Moore, TX, Mrs. Mary Deuchiasky of Chickasha, and Mrs. Nellie Shepard of San Antonio. |

She was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Church and the Altar Society. Mother of four sons, John L. of Elgin, James of Carnegie, Herbert and Edward, Apache and one daughter, Mary Douchinsky of Chickasha. Sister of Emma Hayden and Hattie Nocker, both of San Antonio. She also had one step-son, George Hemming of Moore, TX; one step-daughter, Nellie Shepard of San Antonio. |

Hemming on April 23, 1930. They made their home on a farm in the Apache area until retiring and moving into Apache in 1964. She died December 16, 1967 in Anadarko. She had three sisters, Mary, Annie and Kate Healey, all of Glasgow; five nephews, Herbert and Edward Hemming of Apache, James, Carnegie, John L. of Elgin, and George Hemming of Moore, TX; two nieces, Mrs. Mary Douchemy of Chickasha, and Mrs. Nellie Shepard of San Antonio. |

Hemming, of Apache, Oklahoma, was born February 20, 1918 in Broxton, Oklahoma to Joseph Lawrence and Ida Helen [Nocker] Hemming. He passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the age of 103 in Lawton. Viewing will be Thursday, June 3, from 9:00A.M. to 7:00P.M. and Friday, June 4, from 9:00A.M. to 12:00P.M. at Crews Funeral Home in Apache. Funeral services will be Friday, June 4, at 2:00P.M. at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Apache, with Father Rayanna Narisetti officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home. Herb attended Alden schools and Central Catholic High School. He owned a farm where he raised cattle, wheat and cotton. During wheat harvest time, he would harvest from Oklahoma to Montana. He was elected to the Apache Farmers Co-op Board in 1973 and appointed president in 1979, a position he held for 6 years. He retired from the board in 1985. He loved to raise a garden and did so until he was 102. At 103, he still drove a vehicle and had amazing penmanship. He was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church and served as their bookkeeper. He also helped to rebuild the steeple at the church after it burned and he mowed the church lawn for many years. He read The Anadarko Daily News, The Lawton Constitution, and The Apache News daily/weekly. Herb enjoyed playing dominoes and won many championships trophies. He loved to do woodworking/cabinetry projects and repairing guns and fishing poles. Herb also enjoyed deer hunting and had traveled to New Mexico to hunt. He enjoyed his friend, Jed Denton, who came frequently to visit him. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Janet Hemming; brothers George Hemming, John Hemming, James Hemming, Edward Hemming; and stepsons, Wayne Hudgins and Jerry Hudgins. Herb is survived by his stepchildren: Lois and husband Myron Murray of Marlow and Jane Bradford of Asotin, Washington; 4 grandchildren including Brian Murray and Karin and husband Bryan Brantley, all of Marlow; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She preceded him in death. John enjoyed looking for arrowheads, jug line fishing and camping. [Hancock] Hemming September 23, 1923 ~ May 10, 2011 Janet Hemming of Apache, Oklahoma was born September 23, 1923 southeast of Alden in rural Caddo County to Thomas and Oma Jones Hancock. She passed away May 10th in Lawton, OK at the age of 87. She was married to Robert Hudgins. To this union, 3 children were born. They were divorced. She lived in Oregon and worked at Roseburg Lumber in their Plywood Division. She later moved back to Apache and married A.J. Maguire in 1969. He preceded her in death August 26, 1979.1st She then married Herbert Joseph Hemming on March 2, 1982 in Apache, OK. Janet was a founding member of the Apache VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church where she also served as president of the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed sewing and especially loved to work in her flower gardens. Hemming, 79, Carnegie, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carnegie First Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Blount officiating. Mrs. Hemming died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at her home. Burial will be at Alfalfa Cemetery under direction of Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home, Carnegie. She was born May 16, 1924, in Boise City to William I. and Janie "Joyce" Miller Matthews. She graduated from Boise City High School, and attended Oklahoma College for Women three years, and Southwestern one year. She married Johnny Davis, and he died in 1951. She married James Hemming on Jan. 18, 1958, in Apache. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught the 7-year-old class for many years. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Kynn and Carleta Davis and Cary Don and Latrisha Davis; a daughter, W. Janie White, Carnegie; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Allen M. Matthews; and a sister, Elsie Louise Smith. |

He passed away January 13, 2017 in Oklahoma City at the age of 66. Jim graduated from Elgin High School and entered the US Navy. He served during the Vietnam Conflict. He returned to civilian life and went to work for Comanche County District 2 doing road work until his retirement. Jim was a member of the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church if Apache. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as playing dominoes with his friends. He is survived by: His father- John Hemming Apache, OK 3 brothers and their wives - David and Brenda Hemming Apache, OK Robert and Rosanna Hemming Napa, ID; Michael and Jerry Ann Hemming Enid, OK 2 sisters- Ruth and Brad West Elgin, OK Theresa Nolen Elgin, OK Many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: His mother, Alma Ruth Hemming 1 niece- Barbara Ann McComas. A wake service will be held Tuesday, January 17th at 6:00 P.M. in the Crews Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass will be said Wednesday, January 18th at 10:00 A.M. at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church with Fr. Tim Ruckels officiating and assisted by Deacon Tom Biles.
