Apache, Oklahoma October 8, 1948 August 10, 1920 ~ December 27, 1947 Rites Yesterday For Sgt Doyle R. Gustin Body of Apache Soldier Who Lost Life in Plane Crash In Italy Arrived Wednesday Funeral services were held at the Christian church at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon for Staff Sgt. Doyle R. Gustin, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Gustin, who was killed in the crash of an air transport in the Alps Mountains in Italy last November. Rev. C.C. Scott, Baptist pastor officiated. Business houses closed during the services. Full military rites were given by the Rinker-Mason American Legion post. Burial was in Fairview cemetery under direction of the Crew's Funeral Home. Sgt. Gustin's body arrived at 4 p.m. Wednesday and was accompanied by Staff Sgt. Vincent Hamm of New York City, the escort. Sgt. Gustin was killed between Pisa, Italy and Frankfurt, Germany, while on the first lap of his trip home. His body was not found until August 6, 1948. He was declared dead by the war department December 27, 1947. His age was 27. He had been in the army nine years, was overseas twice and was wounded in action in the last war. He was married to Miss Gladys Garrett of Louisville, Ky. in that city July 5, 1946. Surviving him are his wife; a daughter by a former marriage, Patricia Ann of Oklahoma City; his parents; five brothers, Raymond of Overhurst, Calif.; Lloyd of Sunflower, Kans.; Melvin of Canadian, Tex.; Wendell of the home; and Dean, who is in the army in Germany; and seven sisters, Mrs. B.L. Weathers and Mrs. Oliver Hawkins, of Lawton; Mrs. Joe A. Jones of Oney; Mrs. Marvin Chesney and Mrs. Almeda Rath of Oklahoma City; and Mrs. Maude Belle Smith. |
