William Thomas Durrett
August 31, 1846 ~ November 10, 1903

The entire community was saddened Monday morning by the news that City Marshal, W.T. Durrett had passed away during the preceding night.

William Thomas Durrett was born in Platte County, Missouri, August 31, 1846, and died in Apache, Okla., early Monday morning, November 10, 1903, being 57 years, two months, and nine days old.

His last illness was a short one, of less than a week duration, and up to a few days before his death, he was able to be upon our streets and attend to his duties in his usual careful and efficient manner.

In his early life he affiliated himself with the Baptist Church.

He was married to Miss Sophrona Sherwood on October 6, 1870, who now survives to mourn his loss. To them three children were born, all of whom died in infancy.

The deceased spent the greater part of his life in his native state, devoting his time to farming. One year he lived in Nebraska and engaged in mercantile pursuits. About two years ago he came to Apache, where the closing months of his life were spent.

At the caucus held jut prior to the town election last spring he was the people's choice for city marshal and was appointed to that position by the town board, which office he held up to the time of his death, to the satisfaction of all the citizens of the town.

The funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon at the Christian Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. R.H. Simmons. After the service the remains were laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.

W.T. Durrett was highly respected by all in the community. While he made no loud pretension of religion he lived the every day religion of an incorruptible, honest man. He was a man of strong character and integrity, and in his death Apache loses an efficient officer, a good citizen and a true friend and neighbor."
