© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, August 4, 1937 October 25, 1870 ~ July 29, 1937 Mrs. Challis Dies After Long Illness ALDEN, August 2.--Mrs. R.W. Challis, pioneer farm woman of this community, died at a hospital in Elk City Thursday noon after an illness of three years. She was taken to the hospital eight weeks ago where she remained two weeks and was removed to the home of a daughter at Cordell. A week later she was brought home. She was returned to the hospital Saturday before her death Thursday. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. A special service by Rev. Elmer Kelly of scripture reading, a prayer and the singing of a hymn by a quartet was held in the home before taking the body to the Methodist Episcopal church in Apache where the regular service was held by the Rev. Carl J.T. Straub of the Alden Cumberland Presbyterian church. Special music was rendered by a choir of the Alden community and members of the church. The pastor's subject was "The reward of the Righteous." The remains were laid to rest in the Apache cemetery. Opal E. Utter was born October 25, 1870 near Thornton, Ind., died July 29, 1937, aged 66 years, 9 months and 4 days. She was married to Raymond W. Challis in Harper, Kans. February 24, 1897. To this union 10 children were born, three of whom died in infancy. Besides the husband the following children survive; Mrs. Cora Lindsey, Magnus, Ark.; Ursel L. Challis and Wendell M. Challis, Overton, Texas; Mrs. Maurine Edwards, Cordell, Okla.; Raymond W. Challis, Porter Hill, Okla.; and Leona and Everett Challis, Apache. Mr. and Mrs. Challis lived in Harper, Kans. until 1902 when they moved to Caddo county where they have resided since. Mrs. Challis gave her heart to the Lord in Missouri at the age of 16. She was baptised and placed her membership with the Methodist church, South. In 1919 she removed her membership and placed it with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Alden where it remained at the time of her death. |

Challis were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Methodist church with Rev. A.F. Heusel, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Rev. Bascom Doak, pastor, assisted and burial was in the Fairview cemetery at Apache. Mr. Challis died Saturday after an illness of about three years, most of that time being spent in the hospital. Raymond Wallace Challis was born December 23, 1870, at Osawatomie, Kansas. He was married to Opal E. Utter at Harper, Kansas, on January 24, 1894. They moved to a farm southeast of Carnegie in 1902. Mrs. Challis died July 29, 1937. In 1942 Mr. Challis retired from farming and on February 14, 1946, he was married at Hobart to Mrs. Zena Erman of Alden. They have made their home in Carnegie since then. He served as a member of the Alden school board for 32 years, had been superintendent of the Alden and Mount Home Sunday school for years and was secretary of the board of the Apache Farmers Union for 26 years. He was a member of the Methodist church and had served as a member of the official church board. He is survived by his wife of the home at 310 S. Broadway; four sons, W.L. Challis of Odessa, Texas, W.M. of New London, Texas, Raymond, San Diego, and Everet of Apache; three daughters, Mrs. Cora Kent, San Diego, Mrs. Maurine Edwards, Hobbs, N.M., and Mrs. Leona Abernathy, Oklahoma City' 17 grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchildren. |
Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma February 9. 1999 October 2, 1914 ~ February 8, 1999 Funeral for Everett Lester Challis, 84, Apache, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church of Apache with the Rev. Bud Jones, pastor of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Apache, officiating. Mr. Challis died Monday in Lawton. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under direction of Crews Funeral Home. He was born in October 2, 1914, in Alden. He married Lorene Dodson on July 25, 1935, in Comanche County. She died July 26, 1996. He was a farmer and was also employed by Kardokus Oil and Gas Co. for almost 30 years as an LP gas truck driver.He was a member of Wichita Mountains Good Sam Club, and was a Baptist. Survivors include three sons: Harold, Lago Vista, Texas; Gaylon, Hurst, Texas; and Larry, Noble; a daughter, Sheila Coffman, Apache; a sister, Leona Abernathy, Lindsey; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. |

Bud Jones, pastor of First Pentecostal Holiness Church, officiating. Mrs. Challis died July 26, 1996 at her home in Apache after an extended illness. She was born March 16, 1918 in Apache and married Everett Challis in Comanche County on July 25, 1935. Mrs. Challis worked in Civil Service until her retirement in 1979. She belonged to the Farmerette Sewing Club and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Apache. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Harold Challis of Grapevine, Texas, Gaylon Challis of Hurst, Texas, and Larry Challis of Noble; one daughter, Sheila Coffman of Apache; one brother, Jim Dodson of Apache; four sisters, Madge Gilliam and Bertha Huston, both of Sunnyvale, Calif., Cody Decker of Sacramento, Calif., and Faye Arthur of Lampasas, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Cleo Dodson. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Apache, under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.
