William Lee "Doc" Cooper

William Lee "Doc" Cooper and Gertrude White met in 1943 and were married in 1944.

I, Gertrude, had graduated from Cement High School in May 1944, and had gone to work for Long Bell Lumber Company as bookkeeper. Doc was working for L.D. "Jack" Laughlin of Cyril, Oklahoma, driving a truck. He hauled crushed rock from Richards Spur rock crusher near Lawton, unloaded cement and mud from box cars on the railroad for the oil field and hauled oil and asphalt from the refinery in Cyril for Anderson-Prichard.

We were married September 25, 1944. We moved to New Mexico and Texas, but we always came back to Cement.

We had ten children. All of them have a high school diploma from Cement High School. Our children are Ann, Jacquelyn, Bobby, Sharron, Bonnie, Marla, Jean, Howard, Tammy and Lynn.

Doc went to work for Mr. and Mrs. Zoral Young at Young's Well Servicing Company in 1957 and worked there until 1981 when he became ill. He passed away in 1983 of cancer. We still had four children living at home. Times were hard, but my kids helped me make it.

I still live in the same house that we had when we lost Doc. In July 2000, we lost Sharron. My kids came to my rescue again.

Our grand kids and great-grand kids all come home, especially on holidays. Since I live in the country, they can ride bicycles, play ball and whoop and holler all they want to and not disturb any of the neighbors. They and my children are my reason to stay around.
