Gary Don Avery

Graveside service for Gary Don Avery, 59, Cement, will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cement Cemetery with Chaplain Bill Holly, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fletcher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Avery passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his home in Cement at the age of 59.

Gary Don Avery was born August 24, 1956, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma to Charles and Onsby Faye [Briggs] Avery.

He went to Walters Schools until his family moved to Elgin where he attended Elgin High School until graduating in 1974. He was a member of the school band and was active in Boy scouts.

After graduation, Gary Don joined the United States Navy, where he served his country from April 16, 1975 until being honorably discharged on June 17, 1979. During his time in the Navy, he worked as a Hull Technician and repaired ships. Gary Don attended college in Okmulgee for a while before going to work as a mechanic on Ft. Sill for 16 years.

He married Susan Chaney on August 12, 2000 and the two were married for 16 years.

The couple moved from Fletcher to Chouteau where Gary Don worked as a truck driver for 15 years. When his health no longer allowed him to drive a truck, he and Susan moved back to Cement.

Gary Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and being outdoors. He was a wonderful man and will be missed by all those who knew him.

He is survived by his mother, Faye Ryder, of Wichita Mountain Estates; 1 stepson, Roy Cates, of Fletcher; 2 stepdaughters: Jessica Atkeson and her husband Greg and Minday Clift and her husband Travis, all of Cement; 1 brother, Jerry Avery, of Lawton; 1 stepsister, Kay Avery, of Lawton; 6 grandchildren: Caleb, Erica, and Emily Travis, Caden Atkeson, and Kerwin and Kaedee Clift; and 1 great grandchild, Chloe Travis.

He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Avery; stepfather, John Ryder; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
