May 24, 1936 ~ May 20, 2011


ARLINGTON, Texas Funeral for Richard Soontay, 74, Arlington, Texas, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Comanche Nation Funeral Home with Duke Tsoodle Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow at Cache Creek Cemetery, west of Apache.

Richard passed away Friday, May 20, 2011, in Arlington, Texas.

Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 2701 SW J, Lawton.

He was born May 24, 1936, to Howard "Allen" and Alice Domebo Soontay, in Stecker. He was a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma and was a Kiowa descendant. He married Billie Berryhill on June 16, 1962, in Oklahoma City. They raised four children.

He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Kenneth Wallace and wife, Dee, of Arlington, Texas; two daughters: Nancy and husband, Dave Pipins, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Lynn Wallace, of Oak Cliff, Texas; one brother, Robert Soontay and wife Inetta, Hulbert, Okla.; three sisters: Bernice Soontay Key, of San Carlos, Ariz.; Bertha Soontay Hogan, of Crow Agency, Montana; and Nettie Soontay Sandoval, of Yukon; grandchildren: Carrie Wallace, David Pipins, Jason Wallace, Allen Totubbi, Richard Totubbi, Misty Totubbi, Sarah Totubbi, Brandon Totubbi, Sasha Wallace, Vanessa Two Lance and Bryan Wallace; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army from March 23, 1956, to Feb. 16, 1959. He served in the Signal Corps stationed in Italy. He attended Cameron State Agricultural College and Oklahoma State Tech, and he graduated from Dallas Bible College in 1979. He was a co-pastor and pastor at the Open Door Indian Bible Church, in Dallas for many years. He also worked as a landscaper. He attended the Fellowship Bible Church and Dallas Indian Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Alice Soontay; brother, Howard "Tony" Soontay; sisters: Roberta Hawzipta Attocknie and Cora Soontay Tiddark; and one son, Emon Chuck Wallace.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Thursday, May 26, 2011

Madeline [Pewo] Soontay

Madeline Pewo Soontay was born May 2, 1937, to Wilson Ware and Ethel Eikeahpihoodle Pewo. Madeline resided in Apache with her family and husband, Howard Tony Soontay Jr.

Madeline was called to her heavenly home on Monday, January 15, 2018, at the age of 80.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Comanche Community Center in Apache.

Burial will be at Cache Creek Cemetery under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home.

Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2018, at the community center in Apache.

Madeline attended Fort Sill Indian School, where she was active in cheerleading, basketball and other activities. She then attended Apache High School, where she played basketball. She graduated from Apache High School in 1955.

She supported various organizations: Purple Heart Descendants, Apache Blackfeet Society, Chalepah Blackfeet Society and O Ho Mah Lodge Society. She took pride in having one daughter, two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters who served as aw day mahtawns for the oldest Kiowa organization, the O Ho Mah Lodge. It brought her much happiness to cook in support. She was known for her rice and raisins, biscuits and frybread. She was also a gifted seamstress, and she sewed for all her princesses, family and friends. Mattie loved to work with yarn. She made many shawl bags that are recognized as her work at powwows across Indian Country.

She was a sports fan. Her teams were OKC Thunder, OU Sooners and the Dallas Cowboys, but any sport was entertainment to her.

Her shows were Family Feud, The Price Is Right, The Haves and the Havenots, The Waltons, Little House on the Prarie and Walker Texas Ranger. She also had a favortite game at the casino, All That Glitters.

She was very involved with her family, and she supported every activity they were involved in. She traveled many miles to attend basketball games, track meets, spelling bees, powwows, concerts, live theatre, ballets and costume parties to name a few. She would play cards, board games and was a fierce domino player. She spent many days at the creek having fun with the grands and greats.

She is survived by her children: Wraydell Beartrack and wife Dewey of Anadarko, Glorietta Ahtone and husband Vohn of the home, and Tonilynn Soontay and companion Joey Goombi of Anadarko; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; one brother, Donald Pewo and wife Karen of Anadarko; one sister, Glenda Pewo Mendez and husband Mario of Lawton; sisters-in-law: Mary Pewo of Apache, Bertha Soontay Hogan of Crow Agency, Mont., and Nettie Soontay of Yukon; and brother-in-law, Robert Soontay and wife Inetta of Tahlequah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband; her son, Wilson Pewo; her daughter, Leslie Parker Hernandez; brothers: Calvin Pewo, Vernon Pewo, Milton Pewo and Dennis Pewo; one sister, Roberta Pewo Toehay; and one great-grandson, Jaxon Amos Aitson.
