Lula Smith Rites Thursday


Funeral services for Lula Jean Smith, age 73 of Anadarko, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Reformed Church in Apache.

She died Saturday, February 10, 2007, at a Lawton hospital. Lula Jean Blackowl was born on October 24, 1933 in Apache, the daughter of Archie Wade and Faith Attocknie Blackowl.

She was a member of the Catholic Faith and of Comanche and Cheyenne decent. She is from the Yellowfish-Attocknie families and is a descendant of Ten Bears.

Reared in Apache, she attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and also attended the Ft. Sill Indian School before graduating from the Concho Indian School.

Upon graduation, she worked for Sequoyah Mills before enrolling at Haskell Institute where she received her certification as a dental assistant. As a student at Haskell Institute, she was active in the Indian Club where she served as president.

She belonged to The Girls and Barefoot handgame teams and was the founder of `The Crew."

Smith also danced in traditional buckskin and stomp dancing for which she held many championship titles.

Burial will be in the Cache Creek KCA Cemetery west of Apache under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home in Lawton.

Survivors include children, Gerard "Bear" Blackowl, LaQuinta "Quinkie" Beaver and her husband, Myron, Clemencia "Chickie" Smith, Kenneth Wesley Smith and Narissa "Teeny" Smith-Gonzalez, all of Anadarko, Ila "New Baby" and Keith Bennett of Elgin; two adopted sons: Keith Wetselline of Lawton and Billy Komahcheet and his wife, Amber, of Indiahoma; a son-in-law, William Morgan Tosee, Sr.; 16 grandchildren, Lura Mai Smith, Derris Allen Smith, Robert Louis Tsotaddle, Jr., William Morgan Tosee, Jr., Waylon Nordmark Chavez, Rachelle Ione Tosee-Rankin, Deava Veree Chavez, Mariah Nadine Tsotaddle, Delos Wade Chavez, Cecily Monique Doyeto, John Michael Beaver, Santana Smith, Laken Yvonne Tosee, Kendra Denese Tosee, Miranda Pauline Beaver, Shonnda Marie Blackowl; four great-grandchildren, Destiny Renee Tosee, Lillian Rain Vaughn, Ila Kiyah-Jean Vaughn, Dashanell Benedict Topaum; three brothers, George Blackowl, Daniel Blackowl and Arche Blackowl, III, all of California; three sisters, Ola Mae Tsatoke of Apache, Ida Lura Asah Jones of Oklahoma City, Donna Jean Mopope Tsatoke of Anadarko.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one infant son, Devere Felix Smith; and eight brothers, Albert "Butchie" Blackowl, Ollie "Sawyer" Blackowl, Wilbur "Billy" Blackowl, Archie Wade Blackowl, Jr., Jasper Blackowl, Joe Blackowl, Brian Blackowl, and Richard Blackowl.

Leann [Parker] Smith
January 24, 1964 ~ June 9, 2015


ANADARKO Leann Parker-Smith, 51, of Anadarko, went to her heavenly home Tuesday, June 9, 2015, in Lawton, with her family by her side.

All- night wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Apache Reformed Church.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June, 12, 2015, at Comanche Community Center with Donna Pewo officiating at both services.

Burial will be at Cache Creek Cemetery, west of Apache, under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home.

Leann was born Jan. 24, 1964, in Dallas, to Lester "Tinker" Parker Sr. and Glenda Pewo Mendez. She was raised by Edgar "Butch" and Roberta Pewo Toehay.

She grew up in Apache and graduated from Apache High School in 1983. She recently attended Caddo-Kiowa Vo-tech in Fort Cobb and received her Certified Nursing Assistant certification.

Leann worked at Comanche Nation Bingo in Lawton from July 1983 to 1992, The Soda Fountain Eatery in 2008, and Comanche Nation Angel Program in 2014.

Leann was a proud member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma. She was also of Apache and Kiowa descent, and a member of the Apache Reformed Church. Leann was the great-great-granddaughter of Quanah Parker.

Leann lived her life as a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

She enjoyed watching OU football, spending time tending to her garden, spending of time with her family and friends especially her granddaughter, watching her son Andrew play football from grade school to the state championship his senior year.

She attended the annual Apache Blackfoot Society Ceremony, attending her family celebration, children and granddaughter's school functions.

Leann is survived by: her husband, Mike Parton, daughter, Katelen Lee "Babygirl" Smith, and granddaughter, Alyssa "Sweetheart" Parker, all of the home; two sons: Travis Parker and companion Charlotte , and Andrew "Bubba" Smith, all of Anadarko; mother, Glenda Pewo-Mendez; six sisters and spouses: Leslie Parker Hernandez and husband Paul, of Lawton; Lenette Parker, of San Antonio; Janice Parker Condulle, of Oklahoma City; Libby Parker, of Oklahoma City; Joanna and Sam Redbone, of Anadarko; and Mary Pewo, of Apache; brother and sister-in-law: Jeffrey and Candy Toehay, of Anadarko; numerous nieces and nephews: Robin Turtle, Jalaine Rivera, Emma "Boone" Haumpy, Daniel Parker, Michelle Carlson, John Carlson, Brian Pahcoddy, Glen Pahcoddy and Crystal Cotter; aunts and uncles: Madeline Soontay, Donald Pewo and Dennis Pewo; and her mom Vivian Komardley.

Leann was preceded in death by: husband, Don Smith; her father, Lester Parker Sr.; brother, Lester Parker Jr.; Dad, Edgar "Butch" Toehay, mom, Roberta Toehay; sister, Jolynne Toehay; sister, Tina Marie Parker; infant twin sisters; grandfather, Wilson Pewo; grandmother, Ethel Eikeahpihoodle Pewo; and grandmother, Ester Parker.

Ila Leandra "New Baby" Smith
December 5, 1965 ~ July 30, 2021


'New Baby' attended many schools growing up before graduating from Sterling High School, where she played softball and basketball.

She traveled all across the United States when she was younger, had gone to numerous powwows, and enjoyed traveling to rodeos and ball games to watch her children and grandchildren.

She was very involved in our traditional ways for both Native American Church and in the powwow arena. She had served as tribal princess director for a few years as well as helped numerous of her nieces while they served as tribal and organization princesses. She had also spent several years working for the Comanche Nation in multiple departments, along with the Lawton Indian Hospital.

New was known for her beautiful smile and for being the best supporter for her loved ones. She thought she was a comedian and could never be too serious. She always made the ones around her smile and her laugh was so contagious.

Ila is preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Lura Mai Smith; her siblings: Gerard Franklin Blackowl; Felix Devere Smith; LaQuinta Marie Smith; her parents, Floyd Wesley and Lula Jean Blackowl Smith; her paternal grandparents, John and Agnes Smith; her maternal grandparents, Cheyenne Chief Archie and Faith Attocknie Blackowl.

She is survived by her children: William M. Tosee Jr. and Christy Galera of Walters; Rachelle and Matt Miles of Lawton; Laken Tosee of Anadarko; Kendra Tosee and her father W. Morgan Tosee Sr. of Medicine Park; her grandchildren: Lillian and Ila Vaughn of Anadarko; Penelope and Omar Williams of Carnegie; Jay, Denise, Avery, Hunter, and Oakley Tosee of Lawton; Jayden and Justin Galera of Walters; Destiny Tosee and Zach Howard of Lawton; Bailey and Lucchese Rankin of Lawton; Grace, Ethan, and Ryan Miles of Lawton; Carmelo Tosee of Anadarko; and great-granddaughter, Delilah Tosee of Lawton; siblings: Clemencia, Kenneth, and Narissa Smith of Anadarko; Leslie Smith of Paraje, NM; and special friend, Jim Wedgworth of Anadarko; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Prayer services will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2021, 7 p.m. at the Apache Reformed Church in Apache.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 11 a.m. at the Comanche Nation Community Center in Apache.

Ila Leandra Smith will be laid to rest at Cache Creek Cemetery, west of Apache under the direction of the Comanche Nation Funeral Home.

Lura Mai "Mai Mai" Smith
August 8, 1982 ~ May 24, 2014


ANADARKO Lura Mai Smith, 31, of Anadarko, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in Anadarko.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Comanche Community Building in Apache with Pastor Thomas Worcester officiating.

Burial will follow at West Cache Creek KCA Cemetery, west of Apache, under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home.

Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2014, at Apache Reformed Church, Apache.

Lura was born in Lawton to Ila Smith and Timothy Williams on August 8, 1982. She was raised by her parents Ila Smith and William Morgan Tosee Sr. and her proud Kah-Koo, Lula Jean.

Lura attended schools in Anadarko and Sterling and graduated from Riverside Indian School in Anadarko. Lura then attended Haskell University.

She was a member of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, but was also of Comanche, Cheyenne-Arapaho, and Kiowa decent. She was a member of the Comanche Native American Church and Apache Reformed Church.

Lura was employed at the Kiowa Casino in Verden as a machine tech.

Lura enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children; playing and watching softball, watching her children play ball and New York Yankee's play baseball. Lura was also a Comanche firefighter for the Comanche Nation, and worked at the Comanche Nation Waterpark, Comanche Spur Casino and Silver Buffalo as a security officer.

She is survived by four children: Lillian Rain Vaughn, Ila Kiyah-Jean Vaughn; Penelope Autumn Williams and Omar James Williams; mother, Ila Smith, of Lawton; fathers: Morgan Tosee Sr. and Evelyn Kionute, of Lawton; Timothy and Carissa Williams, of Anadarko; and Keith Bennett, of Fletcher; brothers: William Morgan and Mary Tosee Jr., of Walters; and Dylan and Aidan Williams, both of Anadarko; sisters: Ashley and Stacie Williams, both of Oklahoma City; Rachelle Rankin, Laken Tosee, and Kendra Tosee, all of Lawton; and Hannah Williams, of Anadarko; Marcus Vaughn, of Anadarko; big sister, Teena Jo Redbone, of Anadarko; big brother, Jonathan Lewis, of Lawton; grandmother, Cynthia Ruth Williams, of Oklahoma City; aunts and uncles: Gerard Blackowl, LaQuinta and Myron Beaver, Clemencia Smith, Kenneth Smith, Narrisa Smith-Gonzalez, Yevette Kennedy, and Irvin and Kaye Hokeah, all of Anadarko; Micah and Shandleyn Oliver, of Oklahoma City; Audrey Mithlo, Teresa Komahcheet, Janet Tosee, Debrah Oldham, and Frank Tosee, all of Sterling; and Donald Tosee I, of Lawton; special aunts and uncles: Chesa and Jeff Parker, Billy and Amber Komahcheet, and Bobby and Kari Gonzalez; nieces and nephews: Destiny Tosee, Bailey and Lucchese Rankin, of Lawton; Jay and Denise Tosee, of Walters; and Avery Scott, of Oklahoma City; along with numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by: companion, Cameron Ray Williams; grandparents: Lula Jean Blackowl Smith, Wesley Smith, Andrew and Eunice Sovo Tosee, and Victor and Rosalie Bennett; and aunt, Clarisa Hernandez.
