Bobby was born on August 7, 1935 in Apache, Oklahoma. Bobby grew up in Apache and attended school in Apache and Fort Sill Indian School. He joined the United States Marine Corp and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He then lived in Dallas, Texas where he worked as a Machinist/Welder. He married Esther Anguiano on December 5, 1959 and they lived in Dallas until 1977 when they returned to Apache. Mrs. Pewo passed away on March 23, 2004. Bobby worked for Holly Tex Carpet Mill in Anadarko for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed Pow -wow's and was known for Fancy Dancer and Straight Dance Styles of dancing. He won the American Indian Exposition World Fancy Dance Championship as well as numerous Straight Dance and Golden Age Championships. Bobby never met a stranger and will be missed by all who knew him. Sharon Gomez and the Rev. Marvin Delaware officiating. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Comanche Nation Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Pewo Sr. died Monday, August 3, 2009, in Lawton. Burial will be at Cache Creek KCA Cemetery, west of Apache. He was born May 15, 1942, in Lawton, to Alice Pewo. He was raised by Juanita Pewo Bentley and Lawrence D. Mithlo Sr. He attended Fort Sill Indian School and was a Golden Gloves Boxer. He entered the Air Force on March 3, 1961, in Oklahoma City and was discharged on December 2, 1965, at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif. He served in Germany and received the Good Conduct Medal and the Longevity Award. He married Dora Ware on February 17, 1967, in Chickasha. They lived in the Apache area for the past 42 years. He was a member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma, Comanche Indian Veterans Association, and United Methodist Church of Apache. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons and their companions: John Allen Pewo Jr. and Laura Archilta; and Scotty D. Apache, Oklahoma February 2017 June 9, 1951 ~ February 17, 2017 Dennis Lyle Pewo was born June 9, 1951 at the Kiowa Indian Hospital, Lawton. He was the son of Ethel Eikeahpihoodle Pewo and Louis Tselee. He made his home in Apache, with the love of his life, Mary Green Pewo. He was called to his heavenly home on Friday, February 17, at the age of 65 years. Prayer service will be Monday, February 20, at 7pm at the United Methodist Church of Apache with an all night wake to follow. Funeral will be Tuesday, February 21, at 10am at the United Methodist Church of Apache. Interment at Cache Creek Cemetery, Boone, Okla. Dennis graduated from Boone School and Apache High School in 1969. Dennis was a member of the Kiowa Tribe. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play for the Apache Warriors and Geronimo Blue Jays. His favorite teams are the OU Sooners and Dallas Cowboys. A skilled carpenter, he worked for many years at the Kiowa Housing Authority. He retired in 2013 after 21 years of employment with Dolese. Dennis is survived by his wife Mary of the home, his daughter Crystal and husband Jason Lightfoot; his daughter DeAnna and companion Brendan Jones; his beloved pride and joys, Jasa Denise, Jeffrey Levi and Braeden Michael. Mary was born May 22, 1952 to Bernice Soontay and Edgar "Butch" Toehay. She was raised by her grandparents Howard Allen and Alice ([omebo] Soontay at the Dah-tah-hay allotment in Boone, OK. Mary attended Boone School through the 8th grade and graduated from Apache High School in 1970. She attended Draughon's Business School in Tulsa, OK. She worked with various employers as a clerk at the Oklahoma City Police Department, administrative assistant at the Southern Plains Intertribal Center, was an administrative assistant and CHR at the Fort Sill Apache Tribe. She was an assistant and the Administrator for the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Inter-Tribal Land Use Committee. She was a lifelong accomplished seamstress. At a young age, she made her own custom clothing. She loved outfitting her only granddaughter in custom clothing and tribal regalia. Sewing was her passion and she was known for her unique star quilts. Mary was an avid sports Grandma and loved watching Jasa play softball, Jeffrey play football and Braeden play baseball and basketball. Mary and her late husband Dennis built their family home in 1981 in Apache, OK. She was a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma and was also of Kiowa descent. She is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Crystal and Jason Lightfoot and DeAnna Pewo and Brendan Jones. Her only granddaughter, Jasa Lightfoot and companion Dustin BigMountain. Her grandsons, Jeffrey "Boogie" Lightfoot and Braeden Jones; special niece Henrietta Redbone; her brother Jeffrey Toehay and his wife Candy; sister Joanna Redbone and her husband Sam; brother-in-law Donald Pewo and his wife Karen. Mr. Pewo was called home late Saturday night, Jan. 14, 2012, from an Oklahoma City hospital. Burial will be in Cache Creek Intertribal Cemetery under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Comanche Nation Community Center of Apache. Wilson Pewo entered this life May 12, 1957, in Lawton, the son of Madeline Pewo and Rodrick Whitewolf. He grew up in Lawton, Apache and Anadarko, graduating from Riverside Indian School in 1975. He moved to Oklahoma City and went to work for AC Delco as a Warehouse Manager. Wilson was a member of the Billy Hooton United Methodist Church of Oklahoma City, the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma, the O-HO-MAH Lodge, the American Pool Players Association and Billiards Congress of America. He was a very competitive pool player and despite his disability went on to qualify for the State of Oklahoma to represent the state in the A.P.A Wheelchair challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. His pool playing took him all across the U.S. including Florida and Nevada. He was an avid OU and OKC Thunder fan but his main NFL team was the Miami Dolphins who he loved no matter if they won or lost. He was a proud enrolled member of the Comanche Nation and loved listening to Comanche Hymns; he was also of Cheyenne descent. He loved spending time with family and friends, going to powwows, and family gatherings. Damon will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Apache, Oklahoma March 2015 January 18, 1970 ~ December 27, 2015 APACHE John "Junebug" Pewo, 45, of Apache, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 27, 2015. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016, at United Methodist Church of Apache with Tina Baker and Dusty Miller officiating. Burial will follow at West Cache Creek Cemetery, west of Apache, under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home. Wake service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday, January 3, 2015, at United Methodist Church of Apache. John was born January 18, 1970, in Apache, to John and Dora Ware Pewo Sr. He grew up in Apache and graduated from Apache High School in 1988. John went to work at the Farmers Co-op in Apache after he graduated from High School. John also worked for Food Distribution at the Comanche Nation Complex. John was a member of United Methodist Church of Apache, the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and also of Kiowa descent. John enjoyed going to church and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandkids. He loved to fish and was an avid, loyal OU Sooner football fan. He enjoyed hauling hay and a good physical workout to stay fit. He is survived by his wife, Lora Pewo, of Lawton; brother, Scotty Dee Pewo, of Apache; sister, Nichole Hatfield, of Moore; children: John Pewo III, of Apache; Dara Zimmerman, of Lawton; Felicia Costilla, of Lawton; Dereck Pewo, of Apache; and Alice Pewo, of Binger; four grandchildren; aunts and uncle: Cora Mithlo of Muldrow; Alicia and Randy Mammedaty, of Anadarko; E.C. Ware, of Mountain View; and Louise White Eagle, of Muldrow; special niece and nephew: Jessie Pewo Mithlo and Erwin "PoGo" Pewo. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Erwin and Jesse Ware, and Alice Pewo; parents: John Pewo Sr. and Dora Ware Pewo; brother, Michael Pewo; uncle, Jerry Ware, Wilbur Pewo Jr.; aunt, LaQuinta Harmo; cousin: Lester Parker Jr.; and nephew, Christopher Banderas. |
