Lawton, Oklahoma July 26, 2007 August 29, 1920 ~ July 24, 2007 Anadarko - Funeral for LORAINE MOTAH BURGESS MILLER of Anadarko will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Apache Community Center, Apache, with Alex Matthews, Wallace Coffey and Stan Holder officiating. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the community center, Apache. Mrs. Miller died Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Burial will be at Cache Creek KCA Intertribal Cemetery, Apache, under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home. She was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Apache, to Allen Motah Burgess and Ada Yellowfish Burgess. She believed in the Native American Church. She married Gillis Miller on April 7, 1946. He died in July 1981. She attended school in Apache and at Fort Sill Indian School, and obtained her GED at the age of 55 in 1975, the same year her youngest son graduated from high school. She received an award from the president of the United States for having the highest GED score in the nation. She and others founded and organized the Comanche War Mothers in 1967. The Comanche War Mothers were chartered by the State of Oklahoma. She was commissioned to design and create a robe for Pope John Paul II. The robe was presented in Italy. She also made a shawl for Kateri Tewkawitha. She was one of the four women to organize the Comanche Indian Veteran Association Auxiliary. She was known for her ribbon work and made many dance regalia for champion dancers throughout the United States. Some of her work is included in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC and the Kickapoo Museum. She won many awards during the American Indian Exposition. She was a member of the Cache Creek Presbyterian Church, Wichita Mission, and the Wichita Service Club. She was a member of the Comanche Nation. Survivors include her children, D'Armon Miller, Vella Jo "Jodi" Miller, Gillis Miller Jr., Marilyn "Baby Doll" and husband Benjamin Tiger, and Anthony H. Miller; special sons, Wallace Coffey, Stanley Holder, Darren Cisco, Bill Sage, Joel Wolf, Eddie Mahseet, Virgil Swift, Rick Two Dogs and Billy Joe Ahhaitty, and Sahdi "Jake"; a grandson whom she raised, Burgess Lewellyn "Buddy" Miller; two sisters, Letty Ann Hogan of Montana, and Mable Yellowfish of Apache; a special sister, Irene Lane of Anadarko; a brother, Nathaniel Woomavovah; 16 grand-children, Jeffrey Scott, Jamie Alyson, Jason Christopher, Toni Sheree, Burgess "Buddy", Timothy Wayne, Shirley Jean, Cheryl D'Ann, Elizabeth Ann, D'Armon James, Samuel James, Hope Danielle, Lance Tiger, Anthony Houston Jr., Makhiya Tanequodle, and Ragon Hornsby; 17 great-grandchildren, Joseph, Chelsea, River, Mia, Alajiah, Alaina, JoJo, Gerald, Isaiah, Christian, Yasmine, Joshua, Joli, Janessa, Ises, Atticus and O'Shea; a great-great granddaughter, Adrianna "Rosie Girl"; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, James Francis Burgess; a brother, Ed Yellowfish; her grandparents; and four sisters, Leona Stephenson, Lola Miller, Lavonia Williams and Myra Burgess. |
Lawton, Oklahoma September 2022 August 13, 1953 ~ September 1, 2022 Galand Charles Miller went to his heavenly home on Thursday September 1, 2022 at his home with his loving family by his side. Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Friday September 9, 2022 at the Comanche Nation Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Delaware officiating. Burial will follow at West Cache Creek KCA Cemetery west of Apache. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Galand was born August 31, 1953 in Lawton to Clifton and Alice (Pewo) Miller. In 1969 he married the love of his life Brenda Gayle Beartrack in Dallas. He was loved by many and enjoyed being a kid, he was a gifted singer and guitar player. He built many tribal homes in our area. He loved playing with his nieces and nephews and he was the best story teller. He is survived by two daughters: Carrie Nell Miller of Dallas and Angel Rodriquez of Lawton; sons: Erin Littlechief of Tahlequah; Charles Redford Miller of Hinton and Aaron Russell Miller of Hinton; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Dusty Miller and wife Sandy of Ft. Cobb and sister, Jackie L. Miller of Norman, many loving cousins and other family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Wesley Everett, John (Fleabait) Pewo, Robert J. Pewo, and Redford Aaron Pewo; sisters: Carrie "Dodie" Lowe, and Juanita Sneed; grandparents Everett and Nellie Miller, and Wilbur and Carrie Pewo; great-grandmother, Maude Woosipity. |
