Fred Simpson Steinly

Last Rites For Carnegie Pioneer Held Wednesday

Last rites for Fred Simpson Steinly, pioneer resident of Carnegie and community, were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Methodist church with Rev. A.B. Grubb, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Carnegie cemetery.

Steinly, 84 years of age, was section foreman for the Rock Island railroad here for 45 years.

He had retired and at the time of his death Monday he was living in Oklahoma City with a daughter.

He was born January 17, 1873, in Dreispitz, Russia, coming to America in 1892, first settling near Tampa, Kans.

He was married the same year in Kansas to the former Miss Elizabeth Schmidt. Seven children were born to them, one son, Harry, and one daughter, Leona, preceded him in death in Kansas.

He and his family moved to Oklahoma in 1908. With the exception of the two years he lived in Pocasset, he lived most of the time in the Carnegie community. He moved to Oklahoma City about two years ago.

His wife preceded him in death.

He was a member of the Methodist church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Anna Keel of Oklahoma City; four sons, Fred of Fort Supply, Oscar, Louisiana, Mo., Ira of Durant, and Harold of Carnegie; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, one in Chicago and one in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Services Will Be 10 A.M. Thursday For Mrs. Steinly

Services for Mrs. Fred S. Steinly, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 18, in the First Methodist church. Mrs. Steinly died early Wednesday after being critically ill for the past week. She had lived at the family home two miles south of town the past 45 years.

Rev. Roy Rowlan, pastor, will conduct the services and burial will be in the Carnegie cemetery, with the Pitcher Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She was a member of the Methodist church.

Catherine Elizabeth Schmidt was born Dec. 21, 1871, at Schilling, Germany. She came with her parents to America Dec. 20, 1891, and located near Marion, Kansas.

Here she was married to Fred S. Steinly, whom she had known in her native. land, April 1, 1893. To them seven children were born, five of whom survive.

Mr. and Mrs. Steinly were on their way to California when they stopped here Aug. 29, 1908, to visit Mr. and Mrs. Fred Daubert Sr., and bought the place where they have since lived.

Survivors are the husband, F. S. Steinly, at the home; a daughter, Mrs. Anna Keel, Oklahoma City, and four sons, Fred S. Jr. and Harold, Carnegie; Oscar, Louisiana, Mo., and Ira of Durant; also 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Henry Nightingale, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. Mary Daubert, Carnegie, and Mrs. Amelia Shelton and Mrs. Helen Warren, who with the brother, Jake Schmidt, live in California.

All of the children will be here for the services. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nightengale, who had visited Mrs. Steinly, returned to their home in Wichita late Tuesday and will not return for the funeral.

Harold J. Steinly

Funeral services for Harold J. Steinly, 88, of Carnegie were held Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Carnegie with Duane Kendrick officiating.

Harold was born November 27, 1914 in Carnegie to Fred and Elizabeth [Schmidt] Steinly and died Monday, September 29, 2003 at the Carnegie Nursing Home.

He married Eula Phifer on December 21, 1935 in Anadarko.

He was a farmer and lived in the Carnegie area all of his life. He was an FFA supporter and honorary member, served as a past member on ASC Board.

Harold loved to hunt and fish, play dominoes, the accordion and harmonica. He loved and raised Hereford cattle. He loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a member, deacon and a past Sunday School teacher in the First Christian Church in Carnegie.

He is survived by his wife, Eula of the home; one son, Buck Duane Steinly of Weatherford; two daughters, LaNita McKee of Carnegie and Rena Oyler and husband, Rod of Texhoma; six grandchildren, Karla and Larry Kibbe of Weatherford, Karen and Duane Kendrick of Newcastle, Scott and Kim Steinly of Weatherford, Briana, Shandra and Brock Oyler of Texhoma; five great grandchildren, Kyle and Kelsi Kendrick and Andrew, Kendra and Tyler Steinly; two sisters-in-law, Clara Hays of Clinton and Jean Phifer of Altus; two family friends, John Sullivan of Carnegie and Karen Hunnicutt of Weatherford; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and two sisters; two daughters-in-law, Billie Jean Steinly and Sue Ann [Jackson] Steinly; several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Carnegie Cemetery under the direction of the Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home in Carnegie.

The family asks that memorials be made to the Carnegie FFA Chapter, First Christian Church of Carnegie or a charity of choice.
