Richard Tilden "Dick" Slater

Funeral Services For R.T. Slater Will Be Saturday

R.T. Slater, pioneer settler in the community south of Carnegie, died early Tuesday morning in a hospital at Downey, Calif. He had entered the hospital Friday with a heart condition.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Carnegie First Christian church. Interment will be in the Carnegie cemetery.

Slater, 87, had gone to California about a year ago to make his home with a granddaughter, Mrs. John H. Reynolds. He had returned in October and had spent a month with Mrs. Wanda Slater and family before returning to California. A native of Kansas, he was born November 14, 1875.

He is survived by a son, Claude of Muskogee; three grandchildren, Leo of Oklahoma City, George Slater and Mrs. Reynolds, Downey; and 11 great-grandchildren.

R.T. Slater Rites Held Saturday At Carnegie Church

Funeral Services for R.T. "Dick" Slater were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian church with Rev. Wm. E. Harris, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Carnegie cemetery.

Slater, 86, was a pioneer settler in the community south of Carnegie. He owned and operated a farm from 1907 until his retirement. He was active in community affairs and had been a Mason for 46 years.

After leaving the farm south of town, he had spent most of the past year with a granddaughter, Mrs. Lucille Reynolds, at Downey, Calif. He had been in poor health for some time before his death at 9 a.m. February 19 in the St. Francis hospital, Lynwood, Calif., where he had been for a week. He had returned to Carnegie in October of last year and had spent a month here with Mrs. Wanda Slater and children, before returning to Downey.

A native of Kansas, Richard Tilden Slater was born November 14, 1876. On October 3, 1897, he was married to Leona Ellen Gift at Wellington, Kans. She preceded him in death in May, 1949.

He is survived by one son, Claude, Muskogee; three grandchildren, Leo Slater, Oklahoma City, George Slater and Mrs. Reynolds, Both of Downey, Calif.; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Slater Rites Here Monday P.M. Christian Church

Mrs. R.T. Slater died at 8 p.m. Thursday at the farm home south of Carnegie after being in poor health for two years. Services were at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the First Christian church here and burial was in the Carnegie cemetery under direction of Pitcher's Funeral Home. Rev. Harry Hubbard and Rev. D.C. Murphree conducted the services.

Lorena Ellen Gift was born Nov. 16, 1877, in Decatur, Ill. Her parents came to Wellington, Kan., in 1884. She was married to Richard T. Slater Oct. 3, 1897, at Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Slater came to the Alden community from Kansas in 1907 and have made their home here since.

Mrs. Slater joined the Methodist church at Alden in 1908 and was active in church work and relief work until her health failed. She was also a member of the Alden Royal Neighbors and the Help Your Neighbor home demonstration club, in which organization she was active. She was a member of the Eastern Star until recently.

Survivors are the husband, R.T. Slater of the home; a son, Claude R. Slater, Muskogee; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Owens, Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. Nell Caples, Wellington; five brothers, John and Roy Gift, Wellington; Frank of Augusta, Kan.; Floyd, Halstead, Minn., and George of Bakersfield, Calif.; three grandchildren, Leo Slater, Carnegie; Mrs. Lucille Reynolds, Los Angeles, and Geo. Slater, Downey, Calif., and seven great grandchildren.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Adam Messner, Arkansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Lawn Caples, Mrs. Edna Owens; John, Roy and Frank Gift; Mrs. Reynolds and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Slater.
