© Crews Funeral Home Apache, Caddo CO, Oklahoma Saturday, November 29, 2008 July 27, 1923 ~ November 29, 2008 SAYRE - Funeral for Apache native, James "J.T." Mayfield, 85, Sayre, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Apache Church of Christ with Roy Young, minister, officiating. Mr. Mayfield died Saturday, November 29, 2008, in Sayre. Burial will be at the Carnegie Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home. He was born July 27, 1923, in Brinkman to Walter B. and Mattie [Laird] Mayfield. He entered the Navy in 1943 and served in World War II. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Philippine Campaign Ribbon. After his years service, he married Jo Della Jones Aug. 31, 1946, in Carnegie. He received his bachelor's degree from Phillips University in Enid and his masters of education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Rush Springs, Marlow, and Broxton before coming to teach in Apache in 1965 where he later retired in 1982. He was a member of the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association. He was also a member of the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. After his retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandsons and great-grandsons playing sports. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was also a faithful member of the Apache Church of Christ. In 2002, he was named an Apache Town Treasure by the Apache Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. He moved to Sayre in 2003. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Rudy and Elrene Mayfield, Sayre; and Woody and Linda Mayfield, Norman; four grandchildren and three spouse-in-laws: Matthew and Kathy Mayfield, Monty and Jeni Mayfield, Chris and Jessica Mayfield, and Todd Mayfield; three great-grandchildren: Kash Mayfield, Harrison Mayfield, and Miller Mayfield; and a special niece, Jayden Patterson. |
