"Checker" Lamb, 77, will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014, at Wakita Christian Church, with The Revs. Bob Smith and Dan O'Daniel officiating. Burial will be in Carnegie Cemetery in Carnegie at a later date. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Medford. Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. today, February 9, at the funeral home. [www.lanmanmemorials.com] Checker was born March 13, 1936, in Cordell to Ben A. and Ida [Lunsford] Lamb and passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Community Health Center in Wakita. He was raised northwest of Carnegie and attended both Cottonwood and Union Corner County grade schools through the eighth grade and then graduated from Carnegie High School in 1953. After working at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas for two years, he settled in Wakita, where he was employed by Farmers Coop Elevator for 15 years. Later, he worked for the Adams Alloy Rod Division for 24 years. He was manager of that firm for 11 years prior to his retirement in March 1998. Checker was one of the original members of Wakita Volunteer Fire Department. He retired after serving 20 years. He is a past member of the Wakita Lions Club, where he served a term as president. Checker accepted Jesus as his Savior when he was 12 years old. He was baptized in the Washita River, north of Carnegie, and became a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. Since making his home in Wakita, he was a member of Wakita First Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school secretary, church trustee, church moderator and a messenger and officer in the Salt Ford Baptist Association. On December 26, 1981, he married Judy Brown in Carnegie, and they established their home in Wakita. Checker had a big, loving heart and he loved his family. He enjoyed doing wood work in his shop, serving in his church, visiting at the coffee shop and telling a funny story. Checker didn't preach or sing, but he was faithful, cheerful, resourceful, hardworking, generous and kind. Survivors include his wife, Judy of Wakita; four sons, James Kent Lamb, Steven Michael Lamb and wife Niki of Wakita, Douglas Neal Brown and wife Lisa of Wichita, Kan., and David Michael Brown and wife Meniesa of Tuttle. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, James Robert Lamb, Stefani Lamb Baker, Heather Lamb, Parrish, Justin and Jared Cox, Ethan and Austin Brown and Jessie and James Miller; six great-grandchildren, Steven and Robert Lamb, Laney Williams, Georgia Parrish, Sofie Baker and Finn Miller. Checker was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother, Bennie; two sisters, Arlene Riplinger and Gussie Smith; and one grandson, Kristopher Kody Lamb.
