© The Chickasha Express-Star Chickasha, Oklahoma September 19, 2003 March 15, 1912 ~ September 17, 2003 Jewell Odeen [Reece] Hood, 91, of Carnegie, Oklahoma, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at the Grace Living Center in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Jewell was born March 15, 1912, in Grayson County, Texas, to Maxwell and Velma [Lewellan] Reece. At the age of 5, she moved with her family to the Rush Springs-Sterling area. She attended Oak Grove School where she received her 8th grade diploma in 1927. At the age of 16, Jewell fell in love with Simon Franklin Hood. They were married on October 27, 1928. Five children came from this union and were raised in the Cottonwood-Keechi Community. She began cooking in country schools for meager wages, plus lunches for her children. She and Simon also owned the Corner Cafe in Cement for a short time. Jewell also worked night shift at the Pet Milk Company in Chickasha. Survivors include 3 daughters: Joan Wiseman, Las Vegas, Nevada, Gwen Wilson and husband, Phil, Harrigate, Tennessee, Shirley Dyer and husband, Robert, Anadarko, Oklahoma; 2 sons: Larry Hood and wife, Anita, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Denzil Hood and wife, Rebeca, Puebla, Mexico; 1 brother: Paul Reece and wife Beulah; brother-in-law: Dewey Hood; 2 sisters: Inez Lawrence and husband, Vincel, Lawton, Oklahoma, Dorothy Turner, Elgin, Oklahoma, Imogene Huber, Sterling, Oklahoma; 3 sisters-in-law: Velma Talbert and Faye Hinton, Cement, Elizabeth Reese, Sonoma, California; 2 daughters-in-law: Betty Biggs and Dorothy Fields; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and many friends. Jewell is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Simon; 2 sisters: Velma Howard and Alidee Hood; 4 brothers: Leonard Reece, David "Sonny" Reece, Roy "R. D."" Reece and Norman "Buck" Reece. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 22, 2003, Church of Christ, Carnegie, Oklahoma. Burial to follow in the Carnegie Cemetery, Carnegie, Oklahoma, under the direction of Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home, Carnegie, Oklahoma. |
