Traffic tragedy went half way across the nation to plunge practically this entire community into grief at the height of the holiday season in the closing days of a year shadowed with appalling highway disasters. Four young persons, a man and his wife of less than seven months, and two Carnegie Junior College boys, lost their lives near Flagstaff, Arizona when their automobile crashed a guard rail to hurtle 900 feet into a canyon where it struck a ledge and continued its dive another 900 feet before it stopped a battered, shapeless mass. Mr. and Mrs. Walter N. Witten, Salinas, Calif., who had been here for a short Christmas visit, accompanied by Deotis Boydstun and LeRoy Hines, left here early Thursday for the trip west. Boydstun was Mrs. Witten's brother. Exact time their car hit the rail for the fatal plunge had not been established by highway officials. The bodies were returned here Monday afternoon where arrangements had been made for burial. Final rites for Mr. and Mrs. Witten and Deotis Boydstun were held at the highschool auditorium at 11 a.m. Tuesday when an estimated crowd of 1500 assembled in respect to the two families, long residents of the community. Elder A.O. Merrill, pastor of the Baptist church at Clinton, delivered the funeral sermon for Mrs. Witten and her brother while Rev. Garland Howard, pastor of the First Baptist church of Carnegie, preached Mr. Witten's sermon. A similar large crowd attended the service at the First Baptist church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon for LeRoy Hines. Rev. Howard being assisted in the sermon by Rev. John Stuetton of Lone Wolf and Rev. Geo. McDow. Supt. B.F. Johnson and highschool and junior college singers assisted at the services at the auditorium and the church and the Pitcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
