© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, July 26, 1954 Billy Mac Biggerstaff 1939 ~ 1954 Schoolboy Is Swim Victim On Vacation Tragedy stalked Methodist Youth camp at Turner Falls, south of Davis, on the opening day Monday and took the life of a Carnegie High School freshman. Billy Mac Biggerstaff, 14, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. McCrite, with whom he made his home, was drowned in the pool at the Methodist Youth Assembly camp grounds about 5 p.m. Monday. Rev. Roy Rowlan, Carnegie pastor and dean of the camp, said 190 boys and girls were enrolled. 17 of whom were from Carnegie. About 100 children were in the pool at the time of the accident. Three lifeguards were on duty and several adult directors were at the pool in charge of the children. Services will be at 3 p.m., Thursday in the Methodist church with Rev. Rowlan officiating. Arrangements are in charge of the Pitcher funeral home. Burial will be in the Carnegie cemetery. Billy Mac was born Dec. 22, 1939, at Van Buren, Ark. He had made his home with his grandparents since he was 18 months old. He would have enrolled in the ninth grade this fall term. Survivors besides the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. McCrite, include the mother, Mrs. Rex Childres, El Monte, Calif.; the father, Wm. Biggerstaff, Fort Smith, Ark.; a half brother, Ricky Henderson, 8, who also makes his home with his grandparents, and two half sisters, Yvonne Childres, 6, and Evelyn, 4, El Monte. Two uncles, J.C. and Eual McCrite, and their families of Oklahoma City arrived Tuesday. Mrs. Childres and other relatives from California were expected Wednesday and Biggerstaff was expected to arrive from Fort Smith late Wednesday. All of Billy Mac's Sunday school class and MYF members who are attending the camp at Turner Falls will return home for the funeral. Billy Mac Biggerstaff December 22, 1939 ~ July 9, 1954 |
