© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, May 4, 1949 George Barton Wesley Adkins ~ Adkins Rites Set For 2:30 Thursday Methodist Church George W. Adkins, former mayor of Carnegie and early day businessman, died at his home on West Ash street at 1 a.m. Monday after being in poor health for the past 17 years. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Methodist church with Rev. Charles P.D. Mann preaching the sermon. Rev. Frank Elkins will assist. Burial will be in the Carnegie cemetery under direction of Pitcher's. Carnegie lodge No. 294, AF&AM, will conduct a Masonic service at the graveside and Masons will be bearers. Born in Williamsburg, Ky., March 17, 1876, Adkins came to Oklahoma as a young man. He lived at Drumright and Bristow before coming to Carnegie about 1911 to work for George Elliott in the blacksmithing business. In 1915 he went into business for himself and for many years operated a blacksmith and machine shop. He patented the Adkins trailer hitch. He retired in 1942. He was married to Miss Carra Waddle July 14, 1912. He served on the city council from 1920 to 1924, a part of the time as chairman of the board, was president of the chamber of commerce in 1923, served as deputy sheriff eight years and as city marshal one year. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Odd Fellows and the Methodist church, where he served on the board of stewards. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Carra Adkins; three sons, George jr. and Carl of this place and Wallace of Dalhart; three daughters, Mrs. Ella Martin, Ford Pierce, Fla., and Mrs. Georgia Boulware and Miss Stella Adkins, Amarillo, Texas; two brothers, Jim of Oilton and Albert of Drumright, and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Sweet, Tulsa, and Mrs. Becky Meadows, Drumright. Among the relatives from a distance here Wednesday to attend the funeral or who are expected to arrive later are Mr. and Mrs. Luther Waddle, Britton; the brothers and sisters; Jess Waddle, Okmulgee; Mr. and Mrs. John Ross, El Reno; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Adair, Wilmington, Calif.; Homer Ross, Shreveport; Mr. and Mrs. David Leeper, Bridgeport, Texas, and Mrs. Eula Potts, Oklahoma City.
