Date Unknown Carra Bell [Waddle] Adkins 1891 ~ 1992 On February 9, 1891, Carra Bell Waddle was born in Greer Indian Territory west of Altus, to Code L. Waddle and Laura D. Reynolds Waddle. Doc Reynolds who was the first Doctor and Druggist in Greer Indian Territory and Altus Community, delivered her. She was born in a dugout which was the standard home at the time. A week later they moved to Cordell and lived in a house for the first time on the exact location of where the courthouse square is now. Code farmed cotton on shares for the land owner. Next year they moved to Cloud Chief for several years and then 2 miles west of Alfalfa in 1901. In 1907 they moved 3 miles south of Carnegie, across the road from the present Royce & Tootsie Hawkins home. In 1912 she met George Adkins at a dance at the Reynolds home, which is the present Leatherbury home in the west part of town. It was love at first sight and they were married on July 14, 1912, at the old Dave Vincent house in North Lathram across the river, Dennis Little's placer now. A Brother Daniel of the Baptist Church married them. He was the same preacher who baptized Carra and Manie, a sister, in 1909 in a bend of the river west of town. The water was shoulder high and very cold, Carra said. George and Carra ran the Carnegie Hotel across the street west of the Baptist Church. Meals came with the rooms for 25 cents per meal extra. No charge for 2nds or 3rds at the family style table. George worked for Bogess and Elliot Blacksmith shop but bought Mr. Elliot out and Mr. Bogess in 1915. George went on and in the 20"s, had the first blacksmith chain in western Oklahoma. The large 50 ft. front shop was by the present Bolen Chevrolet Agency. They built the building in 1924. The other shops were at Lookeba, Dirty Shame, Mtn. View, Eakly and across the alley from the old City Jail, where the grain bin now stands. Blacksmiths who worked were Lawrence Jarnigan and Ralph Bucklew, who later had shops of their own. Carra has two sisters left; Della Waddle Underdown, Amarillo, Tex. and Lena Waddle Adair, Shawnee, Okla. Also Margelia Waddle, a sister-in-law at Okmulgee, Okla. The home she owns and lives in, when able, is at 18 West Ash. It is the oldest home in Carnegie, moved here from North Lathram. It is also one of the first to have the J.F. Boory electric service and sewer and water services. She has two boys; Junior and Carl Adkins, who will host a party for her at Junior's home, 329 E. 2nd, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 8. Friends and relatives are expected. On Monday, February 9, she joins the Golden 90 Club. On February 2 she subscribed for the Carnegie Herald but cannot remember how long she has subscribed to it, but says it seems like forever.
