Eli Ellsworth Abney, 86, Dies Sunday; Early Day Territorial Settler

Services were at 2 o'clock Wednesday in the First Baptist church for E.E. Abney, 86, who died at his home on East Ash Sunday, Rev. Burt Miller, pastor of the Pentecostal church, conducted the service, assisted by Rev. Chas. P.D. Mann, Methodist pastor. Burial was in the Carnegie cemetery under direction of Pitcher Funeral Home.

A native of Indians, Mr. Abney lived in Arkansas and later came to the Indian Territory about 50 years ago.

He helped hand the lumber that built the first house in Henryetta. He and Mrs. Abney came to Carnegie in 1937.

He was a member of the Methodist church many years and since coming here has been a member of the Pentecostal Holiness church.

Eli Ellsworth Abney was born Novvember 28, 1861, in Hamilton county, Ind. He was married to Della Lee Hesson at Walnut Ridge, Ark., on December 19, 1886, and to them seven children were born. Two children Dave and Ruby Abney, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Della Abney at the home; two daughters, Mrs. John Montgomery, Carnegie, and Mrs. G.D. Franz, Shamrock, Texas, and three sons, Sam Abney, Mesa, Ariz., and Charles and Roy Abney, Carnegie, also 27 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Relatives from a distance here for the service were Mr. and Mrs. G.D. Franz, Shamrock; Mrs. and Mrs. Sam Abney, Mesa, Ariz., and Charles and Roy Abney, Carnegie, also 27 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Abney and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Abney of Chickasha; Mr. and Mrs. Bud Freeman and Donna Gayle and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Watts and Wayne Powell of Lindsay; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Worthan and Gwendolyn and Mrs. Lillie Abney at Eufaula; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davidson of Oklahoma City and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Wright of Broxton.

Services for Mrs. E.E. Abney, 86, were at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Pentecostal Holiness church with Rev. Burt Miller, Altus, former pastor, preaching the sermon. He was assisted by Rev. Ogland Barger, pastor. Arrangements were in charge of the Pitcher funeral home. Burial was in the Carnegie cemetery.

Mrs. Abney died at 11:30 p.m. Monday in the Curd hospital, after an illness of five years. She had been in the hospital here since last July.

Ida Lee Hesson was born April 20, 1869, in Indiana. When she was a young girl the family moved to Arkansas. She was married to Eli Elsworth Abney December 10, 1886 at Walnut Ridge, Ark.

Mr. and Mrs. Abney came to the Indian Territory about 1900 locating at Henryetta. They came to Carnegie in 1937. Mr. Abney died January 25, 1948.

Mrs. Abney was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness church here, and was active until her health failed.

Survivors are three sons, S.L. Abney, Terribela, Calif.; Rev. Charles Abney, Cyril, and Roy Abney, Chickasha, and one daughter, Mrs. G.D. Franz, Killeen, Texas. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

The sons and daughters and their families were all here for the funeral except S.L., who visited his mother recently.
