County Pioneer, C.H. Stuteville, Dies At Watonga

Funeral services for C.H. Stuteville, Watonga, pioneer farmer of the area 13 miles north of Carnegie, were held Saturday afternoon at the Alfalfa Methodist church with Rev. Jack Lyons, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Stuteville, 94, died last Thursday at a Watonga hospital where he had been a patient for several days. He and Mrs. Stuteville had been living with their daughter, Mrs. Ruth Cunningham in Watonga the past three years.

He was born January 24, 1871, at Newkirk, Mo. He lived in Kansas before coming to Oklahoma in 1902 and homesteading a farm 13 miles north of Carnegie.

He had served as Justice of the Peace at Eakly and had been a member of the Elm Grove school board. He also had been a member of Modern Woodman of America.

He was married to Mary Etta Armstrong March 25, 1897, at Abilene, Kans. Eight children were born to them. Two sons, Howard and George preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of the home at Watonga; one son, Dr. Orin Stuteville of Evanston, Ill.; five daughters, Mrs. Hazel Mueller, Phoenix, Mrs. Edith Jackson, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Ruth Cunningham, Watonga, Mrs. May Lafever, Anadarko, and Mrs. Margaret Lanning, Phoenix; 21 grandchildren.

Mary Etta [Armstrong] Stuteville
September 22, 1877 ~ September 14, 1966


Funeral services for Mrs. C.H. Stuteville, Watonga, a former pioneer resident of the Alfalfa community, were held Saturday at the Alfalfa Methodist church with Rev. Gary Hawkins officiating. Interment was in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Mrs. Stuteville died Wednesday, September 14, at Watonga, after a lengthy illness.

Mary Etta Armstrong was born September 22, 1877, at Abilene, Kansas.

She was married to Calvin H. Stuteville March 25, 1897.

They claimed a homestead near Alfalfa at the opening of Oklahoma and resided there until moving to Watonga in 1961. Eight children were born to them. Two sons preceded her in death, George in 1924, and Howard in 1958. Mr. Stuteville died in 1965.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church.

She is survived by one son, Dr. Orion Stuteville of Chicago, Ill.; five daughters, Mrs. Hazel Mueller and Mrs. Margaret Lanning of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Edith Jackson of Oklahoma City; Mrs. Ruth Cunningham, Watonga, and Mrs. Mae LaFever of Anadarko; one sister, Ruth Fink of Abilene; 22 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

Howard Stuteville Funeral Services Are Held Saturday

Howard Stuteville well known farmer who had lived all his life in the Alfalfa community, succumbed last Wednesday to acute leukemia in Wesley hospital at Oklahoma City after a short illness. He had been in the hospital since August 16. Many friends and neighbors donated blood during his illness.

Services were held Saturday at the Alfalfa Methodist church with Rev. Raymond Shepard, pastor, and Rev. Frank Statser, Mountain View Methodist pastor, officiating.

He was born November 25, 1916, at the Stuteville home near Alfalfa.

He had farmed all his life. He was employed for a time as a ginner at the Southwestern cotton gin at Eakly.

He was married May 1, 1943, to the former Elizabeth Heusel.

He was a member of the Alfalfa Methodist church and was Scout Master of Alfalfa Troop No. 55.

One brother, George, preceded him in death.

Surviving him are: his wife and one son, Jimmie Thad, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Harry Lake, Stillwater; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Stuteville, Alfalfa; one brother, Dr. Orion Stuteville, Chicago; five sisters, Mrs. Hazel Mueller and Mrs. Margaret Lanning, Phoenix, Mrs. Ruth Cunningham, Watonga, Mrs. Edith Blogowsky, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Mae LaFever, Fort Cobb.

Elizabeth Adair [Heusel] Stuteville
October 9, 1921 ~ June 25, 2012


Elizabeth Adair Heusel Stuteville, 90, was born October 9. 1921, to Albert F. Heusel and Helen A. Staggers Heusel at her grandparents home near Salt Fork, Oklahoma. She passed away in Carnegie on June 25, 2012.

Elizabeth, one of eight children, was the daughter of a Methodist minister; and they moved many times during her childhood while her father served various churches.

She graduated from high school at Loyal Oklahoma and attended college at Central State at Edmond for 2 years. She then taught at a one room school located near Hinton and taught all eight grades for one year. She later received a life certificate to teach commercial subjects and finished her B.S. degree from Southwestern State College.

In 1944 Ellizabeth married Howard Stuteville, and they made their home 5 miles north of Alfalfa where she resided until her death.

Their son, Jimmie Thad Stuteville, was born in 1947.

Howard passed away in 1958.

Elizabeth, known as Beth, taught in various schools and touched many students lives during her 41 years as a teacher. Some of her schools included Hinton, Eakly, Alfalfa, Fort Cobb, and Caddo Kiowa Technology Center, where she retired in 1984.

In addition to being an educator, Beth was very involved in her church work. She was an active member of the Alfalfa United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years up until a few weeks before her death. She had sponsored youth groups, sang in the choir and served at the church secretary.

She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Beth traveled extensively and had many stories to share about Europe, Hawaii, and other places, as well as senior trips she helped sponsor.

Beth's greatest joy was her son and grandchildren. She attended their activities and spent many hours with them until her health limited her.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard, her grandson Jeffrey Thad Stuteville; and her brothers Clinton, Cleo and Keith Heusel.

She is survived by her son Jimmie Stuteville and wife Judy of Magdalena, New Mexico; step-daughter Mary Ruth Lake and husband Harry of Texas; her grandchildren, Jason Stuteville and wife Misty of Carnegie, Janae Stuteville of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jordan Stuteville of Tucson, Arizona; Angela Acker-Fisher of St. Paul, Minnesota; Jeffrey Dawd, Lily, Jacob, Madeline, Lucy, and Emily Stuteville, of Magdalena, New Mexico, Great grandchildren include Victoria, Colten, Tanner Stuteville, of Carnegie, OK, Jace, Jared, and Jayla Stuteville of St. Paul MN. Other survivors include her sister Rose and T.J. Nightengale of Lodi, California; brothers Raymond and Violet Heusel of Great Falls, Montana and Harold and Edith Heusel of Canon City, Colorado; George Heusel of Chickasha, OK; sisters-in-law Alice Heusel-Johnson and C.A. of Woodward and Ruth Heusel of Hiawasee, Georgia; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral Services: 10:00a.m., Friday, June 29th, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Alfalfa, OK.

Burial will follow at Alfalfa Cemetery under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Carnegie, OK
