© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma February 6, 1913 John Thomas Stephens John T. Stephens was born November 19, 1852 and died February 1, 1913. The subject of this sketch was born near St. Charles, Mo., and there grew to manhood. May 17, 1882, he was married to Emily Catherwood and moved to Nevada, Mo., where he went into business. In 1906 he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, south and lived a consistent christian life. He with his family moved to Caddo county, Oklahoma at the opening of this country to settlement and located on his farm north of town where he lived until his death. He realized that he was soon to leave and calling his wife and children to his bedside he bid them all good bye and asked them to meet him in heaven. A loving father, a faithful husband and a true friend is gone. He leaves a wife, a son, and a daughter and a host of friends to mourn his loss. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma January 3, 1945 August 28, 1858 ~ December 29, 1944 Funeral At Alfalfa For Mrs. Stephens County Pioneer Mrs. J.T. Stephens, pioneer resident of the community of Alfalfa, died at the home of her son, V.W. Stephens December 29 after an illness of about 3 months. Final rites were held at the Alfalfa High School auditorium Sunday afternoon with Rev. F.L. Collum, pastor of the Methodist church in charge. She came to the Alfalfa community with her family soon after the opening of the country and was a charter member of the Alfalfa Methodist church. Emma Alice Catherwood was born August 28, 1858, at Terre Haute, Indiana and died at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 1 day. She was the youngest of 13 children all having preceded her in death except one sister, Mrs. Mollie Swann, Oregon. She was united in marriage to J.T. Stephens, May 17, 1882. To them were born two children, V.W. Stephens of Alfalfa and Mrs. Myrtle Martin of Weslaco, Texas. Mr. Stephens died February 1, 1913. Also she had eight grandchildren and many relatives and friends. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma January 4, 1956 April 10, 1883 ~ December 31, 1955 Alfalfa Pioneer Dies Saturday In Oklahoma City Funeral services for Victor Winfred Stephens, a pioneer resident of the Carnegie area who died Saturday in an Oklahoma City hospital, were held Tuesday from the Alfalfa Baptist church. Rev. C.L. Martin, pastor of the Alfalfa Methodist church, officiated. Mr. Stephens had been critically ill for about two weeks in the hospital. Coming to this area when he was 18 years of age to buy a homestead, he had made his home at the home place since 1901. He was born on April 10, 1883, at Nevada, Mo. He moved at an early age to Moore, Okla., when his parents came to this state. He was married to Miss Charlsie Paull of Moore, on November 14, 1908, and to this union three daughters and one son were born. His wife preceded him in death in 1929. He was married on October 29, 1930, to Mrs. Nellie Sinclair of Alfalfa, and to them one son was born. Mr. Stephens was a member of the non-denominational faith, a member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nellie Stephens; two sons, J.T. Stephens, Alfalfa; Victor W. Stephens, Oklahoma City; three daughters: Mrs. C.B. Gamel, Alfalfa; Mrs. Cleo Beall, San Francisco; and Mrs. Bill Shaw, Alfalfa; and Mrs. Bill Shaw, Alfalfa; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Myrtle Martin, Weslaco, Texas. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma December 21, 1966 March 30, 1887 ~ December 17, 1966 Alfalfa Pioneer Dies; Services Held Wednesday Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie Stephens, Alfalfa resident since 1904, were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Alfalfa Methodist church. Rev. A.F. Heusel, retired Carnegie minister, officiated with Rev. Gary Hawkins, Pastor assisting. Burial was at Alfalfa. Mrs. Stephens died Saturday at Mercy hospital after being transferred there from the Carnegie hospital. She had been in the local hospital since November 28. Nellie Rose Bennett, daughter of Walter and Martha Bennett, was born March 30, 1887, at Seneca, Mo. She was married to Walter A. Sinclair and in 1904 they established a home in Caddo county near Alfalfa. She had been a member of the Alfalfa Methodist church many years. In October, 1930, she was married to V.W. Stephens at Anadarko. He preceded her in death December 31, 1955. She is survived by four sons, Allen C. Sinclair, Carnegie, Marion R. Sinclair of Salinas, Calif., Victor W. Stephens of Mustang, and J.T. Stephens, Carnegie; five daughters, Grace L. Simmons of Aromas, Calif., Lorene Gamel, Carnegie, Ione Beall of San Francisco, Alice Shaw and Rachel C. Recker, both of Carnegie; one brother, Luther L. Bennett of Hanford, Calif., six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and other relatives. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma April 17, 1929 November 9, 1887 ~ April 16, 1929 Mrs. V.W. Stephens Dies At Home Near Alfalfa Mon. Mrs. V.W. Stephens died at her home northeast of Alfalfa at 1:15 Monday night following a sever illness. Funeral services were held at the Alfalfa Baptist church at 4 p.m., Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Skaggs of Eakly. Interment was made in the Alfalfa cemetery. The Alfalfa Rebekah lodge of which order she was a member, conducted special ceremonies at the home and at the cemetery. Mrs. Stephens is survived by her husband and four children of the immediate family and also by her mother and three brothers. |
Weatherford, Oklahoma November 2010 August 5, 1930 ~ November 20, 2010 Anna Lou Stephens, 80, Carnegie, OK, passed away Saturday, November 20th, 2010 at the Weatherford Regional Hospital. She was born August 5, 1930 in Hobart, Oklahoma to T. L. and Clara [Shackelford] Lucus. Anna Lou spent most of her life in the Alfalfa Community. She had worked at the election polls and had graded peanuts for many years and enjoyed quilting. Anna Lou was a member of the Alfalfa Methodist Church. She dearly loved her family and especially her grandkids, great and great-great-grandkids. She married James T. Stephens, Sr and he preceded her in death. Survivors include: One son and wife: James Stephens, Jr. and wife Dianne, Carnegie, OK; Two grandchildren: Thomas Stephens, Canute, OK; Terry Stephens, Canute, OK; Three great-grandchildren: Kelsie, Brandon, and Cordelia; Two great-great-grandchildren: K'Apri and Lucian; Two Brothers: Jamie Lucus, Oklahoma City, OK; Frank Lucus and wife Shirley, Roosevelt, OK; Two Sisters: Cora Adams and husband, John, Hobart, OK; Sally Livermore and husband, Bob, Frederick, OK; She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Shorty and Don Lucus. Services: 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 26, 2010 at the Alfalfa Methodist Church, Rev. Virgil Payne, pastor, officiating. Burial to follow in the Alfalfa Cemetery, Alfalfa, OK. Visitation will be: 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m., Wednesday 2:00 p.m. - 8:30 a.m., Thursday Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Carnegie, Oklahoma. |
