Henrietta Ann [Miles] Smith
April 9, 1857 ~ January 29, 1936


Funeral services were held Friday for Mrs. J.G. Smith who passed away Wednesday at the home of her son, W.R. Smith here.

Interment was made in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Henry Ann Miles was born April 9, 1857 at Loretta, Kentucky and died at Carnegie, Okla. January 29, 1936, aged 78 years, 7 months and 20 days.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

In the year of 1879 she was married to John G. Smith, also of Loretta, Kentucky who died at Alfalfa Sept. 22, 1923.

Soon after this couple was married they moved to Waxahachie, Ellis county, Texas where there were ten children born. They are W.R. Smith, Carnegie; J.E. Smith, Enid; Mrs. H.L. Hull, Alice, Texas, and Mrs. G.B. Joel, Ft. Worth, Texas.

Six children have preceded her in death.

She is also survived by 16 grandchildren.

The family moved to Oklahoma in 1903, settling near Cloud Chief. In 1913, settling near Cloud Chief. In 1913 they moved to the Alfalfa community and later moved to Carnegie.

John Green Smith
October 27, 1857 ~ September 20, 1922


J.G. Smith, one of Alfalfa's best known citizens, died suddenly Wednesday of heart failure from which he had suffered for seven years.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.J. Morgan at the Alfalfa Baptist church Friday afternoon, and the remains were laid to rest in the Alfalfa cemetery.

John Green Smith was born in Washington county, Ky., October 27, 1857, died September 20, 1922, ages 64 years, 8 months and 23 days.

He lived at the place of his birth until her was 22 years of age, when on January 12, 1879, he was married to Annie Miles and moved to Waxahachie, Tex. To this union ten children were born, five of whom survive.

He is also survived by five brothers and a sister. The family has lived in Oklahoma since 1903.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: J.P. and J.R. Smith, brother and nephew respectively, of Waxahachie, Tex., and Mrs. Garvin Joel, a daughter, of Allen. Tex.

Pioneer Alfalfa Couple Die In Tragic auto Accident On Hi'way


Mr. and Mrs. G.T. Smith Victims of Crash On HighwayOnly Few Miles From Their Home Since 1901; Final Rites Held At Alfalfa Highschool Auditorium Tuesday.

The tragedy of 11 deaths on Oklahoma highways over the past week end was brought to this community with appalling force with the death of Mr. and Mrs. G.T. Smith, pioneer residents of the community northwest of Alfalfa.

Mr. Smith, 76, was killed instantly and Mrs. Smith, 72, died the next morning when their car and a passenger bus collided on Highway No. 41, a mile west of the Bethel church about 1:30 p.m. Friday. The driver and three passengers on the bus were not seriously injured.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith filed on the place on which they had lived since December, 1901, and were known by hundreds of people in Washita, Kiowa and Caddo counties. Because of their kindly nature and the spirit of helpfulness characteristic of pioneers, their influence was felt in the development of the new country. They reared a large family yet always found time to offer assistance to worthy causes and to neighbors and friends. They were charter members of the Alfalfa Methodist church.

Services were held for Mr. and Mrs. Smith in the Alfalfa highschool auditorium at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. G.T. Martin, Alfalfa Methodist pastor, assisted by Rev. W.S. Collins and Rev. R.P. Witt, former pastors, conducted the funeral.

Burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery beside two of their children, on of whom was the first person buried there.

Final rites at the grave were conducted by members of the Rebekah and the Masonic lodges.

Greenberry Thomas Smith was born in Indiana August 24, 1864. He was married to Sarah Jane Blankenship in 1886 and to them three children were born, Wade Smith, Torrance, California; Ward Smith, Oklahoma City; and Mrs. Roy Flagg, El Reno. Mrs. Smith died in 1898.

Sarah Frances Anderson was born May 30, 1868 in South Carolina. She was married to James Buchanan Stewart in 1886. To them was born five children, two of whom, Mrs. J.O. Willis, of Alfalfa and Mrs. F.H. Witt of Oklahoma City, are living. Mr. Stewart had five children by a former marriage, three of whom are living including Mrs. Lena Bennett, Anadarko; Henry Stewart, Long Beach, California and Homer Stewart, Oklahoma City. Mr. Stewart passed away in 1896.

G.T. Smith and Sarah Frances Stewart were married August 23, 1899 at Pecan Gap, Texas. To this union five children were born, three of whom are living. The are Mrs. L.P. Brooks, Oakland, Calif., Cecil Smith and Paul Smith of Torrance, California.

Mrs. Smith is also survived by six sisters and five brothers all well known in this community. They are Mrs. Amanda Anthony, Anadarko; Mrs. Asilie Burge, Shawnee; Mrs. Estella Burge, Fayetteville, Arkansas; Mrs. Roxie Fast, Carnegie; Mrs. Nettie Pritchard, Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Cynthia Martin, Lawton; Bill Anderson, Jeff Anderson and Joe Anderson of Carnegie; Rube T. Anderson, Reedley, California; and Ed Anderson, Oklahoma City.

Also among the survivors are 21 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. All members of the immediate family and practically all of the near relatives were present for the funeral Tuesday.

Among Mr. Smith's nephews and nieces who were present were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Roderick, Mrs. Ida Humphries, and Mrs. Hettie Kent, of Pecan Gap, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. J.V. Smith, Ropesville, Texas; Arthur Smith and Ed Lemon, Ladonia, Texas; Tom Smith, Detroit, Texas; Mrs. Chas. Neely, Union City and Lee Lemon, who made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Roy Willis, a grandson, accompanied the relatives from California.

The large concourse of friends and neighbors who attended the funeral service attested to the respect in which Mr. and Mrs. Smith were held.

Ward Houston Smith

Rites Saturday For Former Alfalfa Man

Funeral services were conducted at the Alfalfa Methodist church late Saturday for Ward Smith, 59, who died early Friday at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rev. Robert Harrison, pastor, conducted the service and burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery under direction of the Pitcher Funeral Home.

A veteran of World War I, Smith had been a patient in the veteran' hospital at Albuquerque for some time before his death. Member of the Carnegie post of the American Legion served as bearers and conducted the service at the grave.

Smith had grown to manhood at the home place two miles north and a mile and a half west of Alfalfa.

Ward Houston Smith
June 11, 1894 ~ August 13, 1943


Ward H. Smith was born June 11, 1894 at Wynnewood and died at a veterans' hospital in Albuquerque, N. Mexico, August 13, 1943 at the age of 49. He had been in a hospital at Sulphur the past winter but his health improved and he went to Borger, Tex. before he became worse and was returned to the Albuquerque hospital several months before he died.

Smith, a boyhood resident of the Alfalfa community, had lived in Oklahoma City the past 15 years.

He was married to Miss Elizabeth McClure, October 16, 1928, at Amarillo Texas, by Rev. E.E. Robinson, Methodist minister.

He was a veteran of the first world war having entered the service May 28, 1918 and was discharged December, 5, 1919. He was a member of Co.G, 143 Inf., 36th Div. and was in three major offensives, Muse-Argonne, Champagne and The Marne. He was a member of the American Legion for many years.

Funeral services were held at the Alfalfa Methodist church at dusk Saturday, Aug. 14 and burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery. Rev. Robt. Harrison conducted the service and the American Legion accorded honors at the grave.

Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, and their nine-year-old foster daughter, Cleonne Houston of Oklahoma City; three brothers, Wade, Cecil and Paul Smith, Torrance, Calif., and four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Willis, Alfalfa; Mrs. Elizabeth Witt, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Effie Flagg, El Reno, and L.P. Brook of Port Chicago, Calif., as well as many other near relatives and friends.

Roy Eugene Smith
November 21, 1918 ~ April 6, 2015


Roy Eugene Smith of Stecker, Oklahoma was born November 21, 1918 near Eakly, OK to Samuel Elmore and Cordelia [Riggins] Smith. He passed away April 6th in Lawton at the age of 96.

He married Gwendolyn Baze in Eakly in 1941.

During World War II, Roy spent time on the home front growing food for the war effort. After a short time living in Oregon, Roy and Gwen purchased the land south of Anadarko where he lived and farmed for the next 65 years. Gwen passed away in 1966.

He married Irene Waller in 1967 in Cyril. She preceded him in death in 1998.

Roy worked in the oilfield for many years as a driller and derek hand. He then went to work as a carpenter contractor for the airbase in Wichita, KS. He farmed wheat and raised cattle and always kept a garden.

He enjoyed reading Westerns. Roy loved spending time with his family, who all live on the home place, especially the grandchildren.

He is survived by: 1 son and his wife - Bill and Donna Smith Stecker, OK; 2 daughters - Barbara and husband, James Ferrell Stecker, OK, Helen Landry Stecker, OK; 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, 1 nephew - David Rexroat Ft. Cobb, OK; 2 special friends - Ralph Redin and Bridget Jones.

He was preceded in death by: His parents; His two wives, 2 sisters - Emma Rexroat, Meda Hamilton, 3 brother - Ezra Smith, Calvin Smith, Harley Smith, 2 grandchildren- Dana Smith, Billy Smith, 1 great-granddaughter- Jessica Ferrell Gomez

Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 9th at 10:00 A.M. at the Alfalfa Cemetery north of Carnegie, OK with Pastor Dan Standifer officiating.

Burial will follow under the direction of Crews Funeral Home.

Local Residents Attend Services For Anadarko Kin

Funeral services for Mrs. Roy Smith, Route 3, Anadarko, formerly of this area, were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Virginia Avenue Baptist church at Anadarko. Rev. A.C. Hawkins, Gracemont, officiated. Burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Mrs. Smith became ill last Tuesday and was taken to the Cyril hospital. She was later transferred to the Anadarko hospital where she died early Thursday.

Gwendolyn Edna Baze was born July 6, 1922, at Velma, Okla. She was married to Roy Smith January 23, 1939, and they made their home in the Eakly community before moving to near Anadarko. Four children were born to them, including a set of twins. One child preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Barbara Ann and Helen Jay, all of the home; one son, Billy Dan of Anadarko; three sisters, one brother and her mother and a granddaughter, Dana Renee Smith of Anadarko.

Attending the services from here were Mr. and Mrs. George King and Mr. and Mrs. Austin Johnson and Mrs. Arlin Holsted of Mountain View. Mr. Smith is a cousin of Mrs., Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Holsted. Also attending were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Davis of Fort Towson, who visited relatives here after the services.

Jack Smith, 85, of Carnegie, OK passed away Thursday, February 28th, 2013. He was born to George Henry and Maude [Caldwell] Smith, October 01, 1927 in Fort Towson, OK.

Jack attended and graduated from Eakly High School.

He was united in marriage to Christine Bennett, February 18, 1947 at Alfalfa, OK.

He enjoyed farming, horses, and playing ball.

Jack was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carnegie, OK.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Smith, Carnegie, OK, one daughter, Sherian Kerlin and husband, Charles, Oklahoma City, OK, one son, Randall Smith and wife, Carla, Potomac Falls, VA, three grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Potomac Falls, VA, Nathan Smith and wife, Margaret, Charlottesville, VA, Kimberly Kerlin, Yukon, OK, one brother, Charles Bedford Smith, Hanford, CA, one brother-in-law, W.B. Bennett and wife, Anna Belle, Alfalfa, OK, numerous nieces nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Roy Smith, Jewel Smith and one sister, Nona Thompson.

Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 04, 2013 at Alfalfa Cemetery, Alfalfa, OK. Under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Carnegie.

Family will greet relatives and friends from 6pm-8pm Sunday at Ray & Martha's Funeral Home.

Funeral Services Scheduled For Mrs. Dale Smith

Funeral services for Mrs. Dale Smith, the former Ronda Willis of Alfalfa, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Alfalfa Methodist church. Rev. Gary Hawkins, pastor, will officiate.

Mrs. Smith died unexpectedly at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Louisville, KY.

Born March 23, 1943, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Willis, she had all 12 years of her schooling at Alfalfa.

She had been a member of the Alfalfa Methodist church since childhood.

Survivors include her husband, a son Scotty Dale, age 3, and a baby daughter, six weeks old, per parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Willis of Alfalfa; a brother, Wesley of the home; one sister, Mrs. Gene Howell, Tulsa; her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Willis, and Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Reynolds, Truth or Consequences, N.M.; and other relatives and friends.

Christine Smith, 88, of Carnegie, OK, passed away Monday, November 3rd, 2014 at the Carnegie Nursing Home in Carnegie.

She was born October 14th, 1926 in Alfalfa, OK to Troy and Cora [Vance] Bennett.

Christine graduated from Alfalfa School, Alfalfa, OK.

She was united in marriage to Jack Smith, February 18, 1947 in Eakly, OK, who proceeded her in death February 28, 2013.

Christine was very devoted to family and friends. She was always caring for others.

Christine was known for making her peanut brittle. She was a faithful Christian, and a member of the First Baptist Church, Carnegie, OK.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherian Kerlin and husband, Charles, Oklahoma City, OK one son, Randall Smith and wife, Carla, Potomac Falls, VA, three grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Potomac Falls, VA, Nathan Smith and wife, Margaret, Charlottesville, VA Kimberly Kerlin, Yukon, OK, brother, W.B. Bennett and wife, Anna Belle, Alfalfa, OK, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was proceeded in death by her parents.

Family will greet relatives and friends, Wednesday, November 5th from 6-8:30pm at Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Carnegie, OK

Wanda Louise [Bowerman] Ridgeway Smith
February 3, 1932 ~ June 13, 2018


Wanda Louise Ridgeway Smith was born February 3, 1932 in Colony, Oklahoma to John and Mildred Ellen [Scott] Bowerman and passed into the arms of her Lord on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at 8:40 P.M. at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 86 years, 4 months, and 10 days.

Wanda was raised and attended school in Eakly and Colony area.

On December 9, 1949, she married the love of her life, Thurman Doyle Ridgeway after he returned from serving his country during World War II. To this union two sons were born. They moved to the family farm after Grandpa Scott passed away in 1952.

Wanda worked on the family farm helping Doyle milk the cows and change the irrigation pipe.

She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, Red Hat Society, and was a volunteer at Weatherford Regional Hospital.

Wanda went to Beauty school in 1958 after the boys had started to school. In 1960, she put a beauty shop in Eakly which she owned and operated for over 40 years. She continued to work for a year and a half after Doyle passed away.

The good Lord had a plan for her; Wanda married Robert Eugene “Bob” Smith on October 25, 1997 and made their home in Weatherford. They had nearly 19 years of wonderful life together before he passed in June 20, 2016.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eakly, where she was baptized, and in Weatherford.

Wanda loved her Lord, her family, grandkids and great-grandkids. She enjoyed working in her vegetable garden, her flower garden, traveling, fishing, camping at the lake, and spending time with family and friends.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.

Wanda is survived by two sons, Dean Ridgeway and wife, Rhonda of Colony, Oklahoma and Jimmy Ridgeway and wife, Debbie of Eakly, Oklahoma; one brother, Verlin Bowerman of Garden Grove, California; five grandchildren, Deidra and Chris Flores of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Travis and Aprill Ridgeway of Carnegie, Oklahoma, Summer Horn of Lookeba, Oklahoma, Darci and Jerry Dunn of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Trevor and Erin Ridgeway of Weatherford, Oklahoma; and six great-grandchildren.

he was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands, Doyle Ridgeway and Bob Smith; and sister-in-law, Edna Bowerman.
