James Ira Butler

Death halts Plan To Join U.S. Navy

Carnegie community was stunned Thursday when word came from Anadarko that Ira Butler had died suddenly at that place. Ira and his father, Dr. I.S. Butler, had gone to Anadarko early Thursday where Ira was to have his tonsils removed. A local anesthetic was administered and preparations were being made to proceed with the operation when the patient passed away suddenly.

Ira had been making plans for some time to join the U.S. Navy. He had passed a splendid examination, except that he was five pounds underweight and had bad tonsils. He was to report to Dallas and was to go to San Diego. Once previously he was named by Congressman Jed Johnson for appointment to Annapolis, but did not take the examination. He was graduated from the Carnegie high school in the class of '29.

Funeral services were held at Alfalfa Sunday afternoon, Rev. Plemons Deatherage officiating, and interment was made in the Alfalfa cemetery. The funeral was the largest ever held at Alfalfa.

James Ira Butler, son of Dr. and Mrs. I.S. Butler, was born at Marshall, Ark. Jan. 18, 1910, died Oct. 16, 1930, aged 20 years, 8 months and 28 days.

He moved with his parents to Alfalfa in 1920. The family has lived in Carnegie the past year.

Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Mrs. E.L. Coker, and two brothers, Tom of Alfalfa and Gordon of this place.
