Walter Pollard Bennett

Funeral services for Walter Pollard Bennett, Crescent, Okla., a retired farmer who formerly lived in the Alfalfa community, were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Alfalfa Baptist church with Rev. Alvin Baker, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Bennett, 96, fell and broke his hip five weeks ago and died Monday in a Guthrie hospital.

The son of Abraham and Isabel Bennett, he was born January 12, 1866, in Stoddard County, Missouri. He was married to Martha Galimore in 1886 in Missouri. Four children were born to them. On December 25, 1898, he was married to Laura Mitchell in Seneca, Mo., and in 1901 moved to Oklahoma, settling on a farm near Alfalfa. Nine children were born to this union. He remained on the farm until his wife died in 1945, then moved to Crescent. Two children preceded him in death.

He had been a member of the Presbyterian church since 1910.

He is survived by four sons, Luther Bennett, Hanford, Calif., George Bennett of Maud, Okla., and Homer and Mike of Carnegie; seven daughters, Mrs. Nellie Stephens and Mrs. Irene Rhodes, Carnegie, Mrs. Mildred Hudgins, Oklahoma City, Mrs. Opal Snelgrove, Tulsa, Mrs. Edna Bowerman and Mrs. Nora Aaron, Receda, Calif., and Mrs. Ruby Jech, Crescent; one brother, W. A. Bennett, Carnegie; 34 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Pallbearers for the services were Charles and Paul Reid, Thurman Whitley, Ed White, Bill Stephens and Hewlett Fullerton.

Laura Emma [Mitchell] Bennett

Final Rites Friday For Mrs. Bennett

Funeral services for Mrs. W.P. Bennett were held Friday morning in the Alfalfa Baptist church with Rev. Clyde Painton, delivering the funeral sermon.

Laura Emma Mitchell was born at Bentonville, Ark., June 15, 1873 and died July 25, 1945. She was converted at an early age and joined the Presbyterian church.

She was married to Walter P. Bennett December 25, 1898. To this union were born nine children one of which preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, Walter P. Bennett; two sons, Homer Bennett, Cloud Chief and Elmer Bennett; six daughters, Mrs. Luther Rhoades, Alfalfa; Mrs. Fred Hudgens, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Luther Snelgrove, Mrs. David Bowerman, Shawnee; and Ruby Bennett, Carnegie; two step sons, Luther Bennett and George Bennett, Colony; one step dayughter, Mrs. Victor Stephens, Alfalfa; fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Addie Davis, Sand Springs and many other friends and relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Bennett were among the pioneers of Oklahoma. They settled on a farm northwest of Alfalfa where they lived and reared their family.

William Alford Bennett

Service Held For Pioneer: Funeral services for William A. Bennett, 92-year-old long-time Carnegie area resident, who died late Sunday at the Corn Nursing Home, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Alfalfa Baptist church. Interment was at the Alfalfa cemetery. He had been ill about three weeks. He had lived on the same farm 71 years.

Bennett was born on December 28, 1879 at Seneca, Missouri, where he grew to manhood. He married Miss Leona Mae Houk on November 3, 1901 at Seneca, and the next day they came by wagon to the present homesite In eastern Washita county. Mrs. Bennett preceded him in death on April 19, 1948.

He continued to reside on the farm and was married to Miss Fannie Alice Willis on July 18, 1949. They retired from farming in 1966. She preceded him In death on May 2, 1967. He was also preceded in death by three children Lloyd in 1913, Troy in 1942 and Mrs. John D. Adams in 1970.

Survivors include eight sons, Alfred R. of Colony, Glenn R. of Lake Isabelle, Calif., George of Carnegie, Ralph 0. of Oklahoma City, Leo W. of Tucumcari, N.M., Raymond of Lake Isabelle, Calif., Eugene B. of Cyril, and Orville of Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Pitt of Hydro, Mrs. George Tully of Carnegie, 33 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. Two sons, Troy and Lloyd, and one daughter, Gladys Adams, preceded him in death.

Leona Mae Houk Bennett

Services Wednesday At Alfalfa Church For Mrs. Bennett

Services were in the Alfalfa Baptist church at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Mrs. W. A. Bennett, who died early Monday in a Carnegie hospital. Rev. Clyde N. Price, Carnegie, and Rev. W. E. Dittmer, Alfalfa, conducted the service, and burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Mrs. Bennett had lived on the farm five miles north and two west of Alfalfa since she came there as a young bride in November, 1901.

Leona M. Houk was born April 10, 1884, near Seneca, Mo. She was married to William A. Bennett Nov. 3, 1901, and moved the next day to their claim in the newly opened country near Alfalfa. To them three daughters and ten sons were born. Two sons, Loyd, 6, and Troy, 39, preceded her in death.

She became a member of the Bethel Baptist church near her home in 1924 and had been true to her church. She was reading the Bible thru to her 92-year-old mother the second time in the past three years.

Survivors include her husband, W. A. Bennett, at home; her mother, Mrs. Mary J. Houk, who has made her home with them the past few years; and the children, A. R. Bennett and Mrs. Geo. Tully, Carnegie; Glenn Bennett, Sanger, Calif.; Mrs. John D. Adams, Stillwater; Geo. W. Bennett, Sentinel; Ralph Bennett, Broadview, New Mex.; Mrs. Henry Pitt, Hydro; Raymond Bennett, Colony, and Leo, Eugene and Orville Bennett, Alfalfa. Also twenty-six grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters survive.

Troy Clay Bennett

Services Wednesday For Troy Bennett

Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon for Troy C. Bennett, 39, member of a well known family of the community northwest of Alfalfa. He died early Monday after a severe illness of only about ten days said to have resulted from a case of the measles. Rev. Dewey Squires, Decatur, Texas, conducted the service at the Alfalfa Baptist church and burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery.

Mr. Bennett was born seven miles northwest of Alfalfa September 15, 1902 and died at the age of 39 years, six months and one day. He lived his entire life in the same community. He was married to Cora Mae Vance near Cowden December 23, 1922. To them two children were born, Christine Evelyn and William Bennie (W.B.) of the home address. He was converted at the age of 21 and joined the Bethel Baptist church in 1938.

Survivors include his wife and children; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Bennett of Alfalfa; eight brothers and three sisters, Alfred of Cloud Chief; Glenn and George of Colony; Ralph of Mountain view; Leo, Raymond, Eugene and Orvil of Alfalfa; Mrs. John D. Adams, Frederick; Mrs. Henry Pitt, Hydro, and Mrs. George Tully of Fort Cobb.

Also 18 nieces and 21 nephews; his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Jan Houk, Joplin, Mo.; his father-in-law, B.H. Vance of Escondido, Calif., and his family, Sallie Barber of Visalia, Calif., Elizabeth Smith, Gussie Walford, Morgan Willis, Lucy Smith and Paul and Bob Vance of Escondido, and Bill Vance of Carnegie. Also a host of relatives and friends.

Relatives from a distance who attended the services were Mrs. Houk of Joplin, Mo., and Mrs. Morgan Willis and Mrs. Lucy Smith of Escondido, Calif.

Alfred Ray Bennett

Funeral services for Alfred R. Bennett, 73-year-old Dumas, Texas resident, were held Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m. in the Alfalfa Baptist Church of Alfalfa, with Rev. Dean Rainwater, minister, officiating. Burial was in the Alfalfa Cemetery under direction of the R.L. Lockstone Funeral Home, Inc., of Weatherford.

Mr. Bennett was born on February 2, 1905 northwest of Alfalfa and grew up in that area. He attended and graduated from Carnegie High School. He later attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University where he received a BS Degree and later Oklahoma State University where he received a Master Degree in Education.

On May 20, 1930, he married Sally Rue Passmore near Weatherford. After his marriage he taught at Cobb Creek School in Washita, Cowden, Alden and Carnegie and for twelve years in Vernon, Texas, retiring in 1968.

Mr. Bennett passed away very unexpectedly Sunday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah while visiting his son. A member of the Dumas, Texas First Baptist Church, Mr. Bennett served as a deacon there. Survivors include: his widow, Sally Rue Bennett, Dumas, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Shirley) Thornton Dumas Texas; one son, Royce Bennett Salt Lake City, Utah; four grandchildren; six brothers, George W. Bennett, Carnegie; Ralph 0. Bennett, Oklahoma City, Leo W. Bennett, Tucumcari, New Mexico; Raymond Bennett, Bakersfield, California, Eugene B. Bennett, Cyril, and Orville R. Bennett, Amarillo, Texas; and two sisters; Mrs. Henry (Floy) Pitt, Hydro, and Mrs. George (Verna) Tully, Carnegie.

George William Bennett

Funeral services for George W. Bennett, 97, El Reno resident, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, in the Alfalfa Baptist Church in Alfalfa, Okla. Burial followed in the Alfalfa Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

George W. Bennett was born Nov. 20, 1910, to W.A. and Leona (Houck) Bennett in the Alfalfa area and passed away late Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at Grace Living Center in El Reno. He was raised in the Alfalfa area and attended school at Alfalfa through the 10th grade, when he transferred to Weatherford and graduated in 1928 from Weatherford High School. He continued his education attending Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma State University and graduated from Southwestern State College in Weatherford where he received his degree in education. He married Miss Lavon Hodge on July 18, 1936, in Cordell, and they made their home on the Bennett farm for 50-plus years. He was an Industrial Arts teacher as well as teaching math and science. He taught school at Port, Cowden and Colony, but most of his teaching career was spent at Alfalfa.

As well as teaching for several years, he farmed, raised cattle, wheat and cotton. They always planted a big garden and shared the produce with family and friends. They retired and moved off the farm to El Reno in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavon (they celebrated their 71st anniversary on July 18, 2007); a son, Bill Bennett; three sisters and eight brothers.

He was a member of the Alfalfa Baptist Church and served in several positions in the church. He was now a member of First Baptist Church of El Reno. He had always been a handyman and loved woodworking.

He is survived by a son, Kenneth Bennett and wife, Zelta of El Reno, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Bennett of Eakly. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Cynthia Bennett of El Reno, Kevin Bennett and wife, Julie of Yukon, Gregg Bennett and wife, Bessie of Yukon, Bill "Skip" Bennett of Eakly and Darin Bennett of Weatherford. Also, five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary and Bethany Bennett of Yukon and Cheyenne and Peyton Bennett of Eakly; four step-grandchildren, Adam, Monica, Sam and Danielle Harris, and one step-great-grandchild, Malacki Harris; a brother, Leon Bennett of
Chickasha; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Althea Giles Bennett

ALFALFA - Funeral for Althea Bennett, 90, Alfalfa, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Alfalfa Baptist Church. Mrs. Bennett died Friday, June 6, 2003, at a nursing home in Corn. Burial will be at Alfalfa Cemetery under direction of Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home, Carnegie.

She was born Aug. 29, 1912, in Carnegie to Henry Newton and Fannie Holbrook Giles. She married E. N. "Mike" Bennett on Nov. 28, 1935, at Cowden. He died Feb. 13, 2003.

She and her husband farmed in the Alfalfa community for many years and she was a member of Alfalfa Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: Bobby Lee and Jo Nell Bennett, and Coy Dean and Kay Bennett, all of Blanchard; a daughter, Evelyn Shaw, Carnegie; a brother, Harold Giles, Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson; a son-in-law; two sisters and three brothers.

Sally Rue [Passmore] Bennett

Funeral services for Sally Rue Bennett, 74, of Dumas, Texas, are scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Baptist Church at Alfalfa.

Rev. Doug Passmore, Baptist minister from Lawton, will officiate with burial in the Alfalfa Cemetery under direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bennett died Thursday, Feb. 19, at St. Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas, following a four-week illness.

She was born Apr. 15, 1912, at Snowball in Searcy County, Arkansas. In 1924 the family moved to a farm northwest of Carnegie, where she attended the Union Corner rural school. After returning to Arkansas for one year, the family came back to Caddo County to stay. The former Sally Passmore was married May 20, 1930, to Alfred Ray Bennett near Weatherford. He was a teacher, so the family made several moves while he taught at Alfalfa, Alden and Carnegie. They later lived for 12 years at Vernon, Texas, before retiring in 1972 at Dumas, Texas.

Mr. Bennett died in 1978, his wife continuing to reside at Dumas where she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Thornton of Dumas; one son, Royce Bennett, Sandy, Utah; one sister, Leonard Bond, Colony; one brother, Page Passmore, Carnegie; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lavon Love [Hodge] Bennett

Funeral services for Lavon L. Hodge Bennett, a former Alfalfa resident, were held Wednesday at Alfalfa Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Chapman and Rev. Joe Sanders officiating. Burial was in the Alfalfa Cemetery under direction of Stanley-Lee Funeral Home. Mrs. Bennett died Sunday at Grace Living Center. She was born Sept. 16, 1913, in Carnegie. She was raised in Alfalfa and attended school there, graduating from Carnegie High School in 1931. She made her home on the Bennett farm for over 50 years. She was active helping on the farm where she and her husband raised wheat, cotton and cattle. She retired from the farm in 1998 and moved to El Reno. She was a member of Alfalfa Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher and church secretary, and a member of the Rebecca Lodge. She is survived by her husband, George; a son, Kenneth Bennett of El Reno; sister, Betty Arther of Hydro; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Elmer Noah "Mike" Bennett

Services for 87 year old Mike Bennett of Alfalfa were Tuesday afternoon, February 18, at Alfalfa Baptist Church with Rev. David Blalock officiating. Burial was in the Alfalfa Cemetery under the direction of Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home.

Mike was born March 16, 1915 in Alfalfa to Walter and Laura Mitchell Bennett. Mike married Althea Giles on November 28,1935 in Cowden, and they lived and farmed in the Alfalfa community. Mike was a member of the Alfalfa Baptist Church.

Mike passed away Thursday, February 13, 2003 at Corn Heritage Village. He was preceded by one grandson; his son-in-law; five sisters; and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Althea of the home; two sons and their wives, Bobby Lee and Jo Nell Bennett and Coy Dean and Kay Bennett of Blanchard; one daughter, Evelyn Shaw of Carnegie; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Jech of Crescent; other relatives and many friends.

Hazel Marie [Pitt] Bennett

Hazel married Leo Wilburn Bennett Nov 9, 1935 in the parsonage of the Bethel Baptist Church, Washita Co., OK.

They raised three daughters and a son.

She worked as the business manager for a trucking firm and a mobile home sales office, among other jobs.

They lived in Alfalfa, Colony, Minco, and Bethany, OK, and in Garden City, KS.

They divorced Nov 17, 1971.

Leo Wilburn Bennett

Funeral services for Leo Wilburn Bennett, a former Minco resident, were held Tuesday at Alfalfa Baptist Church with burial in the Alfalfa Cemetery. Services were under direction of Huber-Reynolds Funeral Home in Minco.

Mr. Bennett died Sunday in Chickasha.

He was born July 13, 1915 in Alfalfa. He moved to Minco in 1953.

He was a farmer and custom wheat harvester and had worked for Leo T. Lion Trucking and Garden City Mobile Homes in Garden City, Kan. He had also operated a car dealership and gas station.

He served on the Minco School Board and was a member of Alfalfa Baptist Church and Minco First Baptist Church.

He is survived by daughters, Earlene Vickrey, Maxine Taylor and Janell Minor; a son, L.W. Bennett; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
