© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, September 11, 1957 Lewis T. Baker Funeral Service Is Held Sunday Funeral services for Lewis Taylor Baker, pioneer farmer of the community northwest of Carnegie, were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Missionary Baptist church. Rev. Jack McRee, pastor, conducted the services assisted by Rev. Jess Thornton. Burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery. Baker, who had been in failing health for the past two years, died of a heart attack at his home Friday night. He had retired from farming and moved to Carnegie in 1946. He was born December 1, 1880, near Ottumwa, Iowa. He moved to Oklahoma in 1903 and lived on the farm northwest of town until retiring. He was married to the former, Maggie Lee Pendergrass December 23, 1906. Three children were born to them. He was converted when a young man and joined the Missionary Baptist church and was later ordained a deacon. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Fred Baker. He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Lottie Passmore and Mrs. Ruth Rhodes, one son, Walter, all of Carnegie; nine grandchildren, Lee Roy Passmore of Bethany, Loran T. Passmore of Anadarko, Wilda Mae and Coy Dean, Carnegie, William, Bobby Kenneth, JoAnn and Darlene Baker, Carnegie; five great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew. Out-of-town relatives attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy Passamore and Judy, Bethany; Mr. and Mrs. Loran Passmore and family, Anadarko; Dr. and Mrs. J.H. Pendergrass, Nacoma Park, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Davis, Corn; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Moss of Loyal; Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Southard and daughter, Moore; Mrs. Oma Tidwell, Cordell and John Passmore, Snowball, Ark. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma October 16, 1976 Walter is the Son of Lewis Taylor Baker, b. Dec 01, 1879 in Iowa, d. 1957 in Oklahoma and Maggie Lee Pendergrass, b. Jul 6, 1877 in Mississippi and d. 1959 in Oklahoma. He married Minnie A. Ogburn in 1933 and they had one some William Taylor. He then married Bessie Willis and they had two sons Bobby and Kenneth and two daughters JoAnn and Darlene. Walter farmed for several years. After selling his farm he started a welding business, Baker's Welding Shop located North of Carnegie. He loved to go hunting and was the President of the Carnegie Gun Club Assn. |

Daughter of Merit Ogburn, born Apr 18, 1859 in Iowa, died Feb. 26, 1932 in Iowa and Mary N. Odell, born Oct. 01, 1865 in Iowa, died Feb 18, 1922 in Iowa. She had one son with Walter William Baker. His name was William Taylor Baker. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma March 16, 2006, Bessie, was born July 21, 1921, at Carnegie, OK, to J.B. and Clementine Marshall Willis, and departed this life March 16, 2006, at Meadowlake Estates Nursing Home at the age of 84. She accepted the Lord as her Savior in 1931 at the age of 10. She was married to Walter William Baker, January 12, 1938, at Anadarko, Oklahoma. They farmed northwest of Carnegie until 1967, then moved into town. Her husband passed away October 16, 1976. She moved to Oklahoma City in 1982. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Southwest Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Survivors are two sons, Bobby Baker and wife, Marcia of Chickasha, OK and Kenneth Baker and wife, DeDe of Oklahoma City; two daughters, JoAnn Weavel of Oklahoma City and Darlene McKay and husband, Jack of Anadarko, OK; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild; one sister, Irene Scott of Binger, OK; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, her husband, one son, Willie Baker, seven brothers, four sisters, and son-in-law, Roy Weavel. Services were held Alfalfa Baptist Church, 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 18, Alfalfa, OK, officiated by Rev. Bill Chevront, interment Alfalfa Cemetery. Directed by Turner Funeral Home, Binger, OK. |
© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Jun 10, 1995 William Taylor Baker born Nov. 6, 1934, in Oklahoma; died Jun 10th, 1995 in Carnegie, Oklahoma. He married Nema Lee Wilson, born Nov. 9th, 1932, on Oct. 26th, 1953. Parents of William T. Baker are; Walter William Baker born Jan. 9th, 1916 and died Oct. 16th, 1976 in Carnegie, Caddo Co., Oklahoma and Minnie Asenith Ogburn, born Jun. 30th, 1909, in Iowa; died Jun 20th, 1936 in Oklahoma. More about William Taylor Baker: "Willie" as everyone called him grew up on a farm. After completing the 5th grade of school, he quit to help his father on the farm. He went on later in life to get he's GED. In 1955 he was in an automobile accident in which he broke his pelvis. Shortly after his recovery he returned to work at the Colwell Station, North of Mt. View, Oklahoma. And on Dec 18th, 1956, while working in the garage at Colwell's, he knocked over a can of gasoline which ran under a stove and caught fire. His legs were severely burned in the accident. In about 1957 Willie started working at the APCO Station on the corner of Birch Street and Hi-way 58, in Carnegie, Okla. In about 1963 he moved to a new location across the street from the APCO, (Baker's Fina Station) in which he owned and operated for 38 years. Other businesses he owned and operated included; Baker's Laundromat, Baker's Quick Stop and Bakers Trailer Park. He built the Quick Stop out of lumber he recovered from the home he grew up in N.W. of Carnegie. In 1966 he joined the Volunteer Fire Department, elected Fire Chief in 1981, and retired in 1992 after 25 years of service. He also joined the Carnegie Police Department as an Auxiliary Policeman and took on extra jobs hauling hay and cotton seed hulls along with renovating homes and mobile homes for rental property. He also served on the Carnegie Fair Board for 5 years, and received the B.W. Jolly Citizen of the Year award in 1988. © Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma February, 7, 2012 Nema was the daughter of John Riley and Mable [Barentine] Wilson. She was married to Willie Baker October 26, 1953 in Gotebo, OK who preceded her in death in 1995. She was a resident of Carnegie for 58 years. She ran Baker Laundromat in Carnegie for a number of years and also chopped peanuts and picked cotton. Nema loved taking care of her grandchildren and always put the need of others before herself. She is missed greatly by her family and friends. Survivors include two sons: Gary and Jonell Baker, Carnegie, Oklahoma; Marty and Shelia Baker, Anadarko, Oklahoma; one daughter: Beverly and Robin Kellison, Hydro, Oklahoma; fifteen grandchildren: Amber Baker, Carnegie,Oklahoma; Courtney and Dean Bread, Lawton, Oklahoma; Cory and Brandi Baker, Carnegie, Oklahoma; J.R. Baker, Kody Baker, and Ashley Baker, Carnegie, Oklahoma; Lucas and Ami Kellison, Annie and Scott Bergenheire, Jacob and Jessica Kellison, Wichita Falls, Texas; Kimberly Baker and Jacob, Cordell, Oklahoma; Brandy and Matt Spradlin, Elk City, Oklahoma; Brittany Baker and Tyson, Fort Cobb, Oklahoma; Shane McCathern and Misty, Breezie and Wade Padgett, and Austin McCathern, Anadarko, Oklahoma; eighteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Willie, five brothers and three sisters. Chapel Services were held February 10, 2012 at Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Carnegie. |
