Civil War Nurse Mustered Out

Mrs. E.W. Inghram Buried Monday At Alden.

Mrs. E.W. Inghram, aged pioneer resident of the community south of Carnegie died at the home of her son Friday.

With her passing another of the few remaining Army nurses who saw service with the field troops during the Civil war was given her final discharge from service to her country and fellowmen and furloughed to that great reserve corps which knows war no more.

At the outbreak of the Civil war her husband, a physician and surgeon, volunteered his services to his country, Mrs. Inghram accompanied him to camp. On being told she could not remain at the camp she immediately enlisted as a nurse and saw active service with the troops thruout the duration of the war.

Sarah Elizabeth Stanton was born October 26, 1840 in Inita county, New York and died near Alden January 17, 1930, aged 89 years, 2 months and 21 days.

She was married to E.W. Inghram in 1859. To this union two children were born, a daughter who died in infancy and one son, Clyde Francis Inghram, well known resident of this community.

Fired with the patriotic zeal that sent her to the battlefield, Grandmother Inghram was active in the work of the G.A.R., doing her part at all times when occasions presented themselves, until failing strength prevented.

She was an honorary member of the American Legion at Techmseh, Nebraska and an active, lifelong member of the Methodist church.

Funeral services were held at the Alden Union church at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. M.C. Scrudder, Presbyterian minister.

Burial was made in the Alden cemetery under the auspices of the American Legion, the honorary salute being fired over her grave and taps blown for the aged veteran.
