Gary Wayne Hamby of Achille, Oklahoma ended his battle against his heart at 6:10 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2019. At 70 years of age, Gary defied many things in life and in belief, and until the very end continued in that tradition.

Gary was born to James Weldon “Pit” Hamby and Dorothy Ilean Stavely on December 04, 1948 in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth, Texas. Gary made a living from being a machinist, he retired from Denison Industries.

Gary is survived by his 6 children– Gary Salas and wife Michelle of Austin TX; Tamra Frakes and husband Andy of Blue, ok;Michael Robertson of Lawton, Ok; Jason Hamby of Durant, Ok; Kimberly Strange and husband Justin of Colbert, ok; Kevin Hamby of Achille , ok 12 grandchildren who each carry their unique appreciation of their papa – and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Sharon, to whom he was married to for many years, and who was his caretaker for the past several years. He also leaves behind his two older sisters – Anita Banks of Benbrook, Texas and Norma Jean Rose of Burleson, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his father Pit, his mother Ilean and the 2018-2019 season of his beloved Dallas Cowboys. Gary will be fondly remembered by his loved ones and friends for his vast knowledge of all things history, for his intense political discussions, for his love of Outlaw Country, Elvis and the Dallas Cowboys...but most of all for his humbleness, because “Lord, it’s hard to be humble….”

There will be a small graveside ceremony held at 2 p.m. on Friday January 18, 2019 at Rosewood Cemetery where Gary will join his father and mother. Family night will be from 7-8 Thursday night January 17, 2019 at Cunningham funeral home in Colbert, Ok. Brother Troy Phillips will officiate.

The family requests that - in lieu of flowers or donations - you have a drink with a friend; hug a loved one, or thank someone for a kindness that they have shown you.

The family would also like to thank Carl Cunningham of Colbert, OK and the medical staff at Alliance Healthcare for their care, compassion and assistance in these final days.

The register book may be signed and condolences sent to the Family online @ cunninghamfuneralhomesok.com Arrangements are entrusted to Cunningham Funeral Home in Colbert, Oklahoma.
