Virgil Henry Short a resident of Calera, Oklahoma passed away in Denison, Texas on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the age of 89 years 8 months and 4 days. He was born in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma on Wednesday, May 23, 1923 to Charles Benjamin and Lenna Ruth (Hix) Short.
Virgil married Lorene McAlester on in March of 1946. She preceded him in death in August of 1995. He was blessed to find, and marry, Norma Dean Cronin in Calera, Oklahoma on Saturday, January 6, 1996.
Virgil was a Army Veteran who served his country with pride in WWII as a Paratrooper with the 503rd in the Pacific Campaign. He was born, raised and lived in Oklahoma his whole life. Virgil was a mechanic by trade. He considered his family to be the greatest blessing of his life and cherished the times they spent together.
Mr. Short is survived by his wife, Norma Short; daughter, Galetta Lamar of Caddo, Oklahoma; sons, Kenny Short and wife Judy of Ada, Oklahoma, David Short and wife Linda Kay of Calera, Oklahoma; daughter, Deborah Wright and husband Larry of Durant, Oklahoma, Annette Loyd of Calera, Oklahoma and Jan McCarty of Durant, Oklahoma; step-son, Stephen Cronin of Columbia, Missouri, Lawrence Cronin and wife Louise of McKinney, Texas and Patrick Cronin and wife Kathe of Macon, Missouri; step-daughter, Amy Cronin of Columbia, Missouri; brother, Calvin Short of Maine; 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Short was preceded in death by his 3 brothers and 3 sisters; 1 great-granddaughter.
Family Hour will be from 6-7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. A Funeral Service in his honor will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the Grace Baptist Church in Durant with Rev. Anthony Williams and Rev. Jacob Towes officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery in Calera. Serving as pallbearers will be Joel "Butch" Scalf, Don Hyde, Charles Wilson, Dwight Robinson, Ted Pass and T.J. White.
