Services for Dorothy Metcalf Shay, 72, and lifelong resident of Bryan County who passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, in Denison, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 3, at New Life Assembly of God Church in Calera. Pastor Stephen Biggerstaff and Pastor Leonard Freeman will officiate.
Dorothy was born July 10, 1936, in Armstrong to Samuel and Lela Taylor Metcalf.
She married Tildon Carter on October 3, 1951.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.
Dorothy was an expert seamstress and her talent showed in her making of many quilts.
She loved her family and many friends deeply and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Tildon Carter; parents, Samuel and Lela Metcalf; brothers, A.J., W.T., and Clinton Metcalf and sisters, Acey Chumbley, Flora Lee Bridges, Mary Jane Bridges and Geneva Collier.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Silas Carter and wife Abby of Wade, Sam Carter and wife Laura of Bray, Tim Carter of Wade, Naomi Cathey and husband Glen of Ada, Mary Jones and husband Scott of Bowie, Texas, Becky Toombs and husband David of Achille and Rachael Rice of Wade; sisters, Betty Vails and husband Thomas of Southmayd, Texas and Ora Lee Thompson of Platter; twenty grandchildren; thirty six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and a host of dear and loved friends.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Calera with Michael Cathey, Brandon Utterback, Luke Utterback, Danny Toombs, Donnie Rucker, Chris Schulze, Rob Ricketson, Stanton Jones and Paul Korn serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
