Lt. Col. Fred Hancher, age 71 years, 9 months, 9 days, of Calera, Oklahoma died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at his home in Calera, Oklahoma. He was born Monday March 19, 1934 in Central City, Pennsylvania to George and Kathryn (Kutziv) Hancher, Sr. He came to Oklahoma in 1977 from Fairborn, Ohio. He married Jean (Eaton) Hancher on August 30, 1969 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Fred graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1956. He joined the U.S. Air Force July 8, 1956 and retired December 31, 1976 as a Lt. Col. He was a F-100 Pilot with 192 combat missions in Viet Nam. Decorations include Distinguished Flying cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters. Since March of 1984 he has been working as Civil Service Engineer at Carlswell Field, Fort Worth, Texas, his goal was to work until July 2006 to make a full 50 years. Previously he worked for Indian Health Service, Window Rock, Arizona and HQ Military Airlift Command, Scott AFB II.
Fred was a member of DAV (Life Member), VFW, American Legion, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) (Life Member), Elks, Durant Lodge 1963, Masons, Durant Lodge No. 45, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of McAlester, 32nd Degree, Bedouin Shriners, Muskogee, Oklahoma, Little Dixie Shrine Club, Durant, AARP and a deacon at First Christian Church of Durant.
Fred Hancher was preceded in death by his parents, George Hancher, Sr. in 1962 and Kathryn Hancher in 1982; brothers, John Hancher and Alex Hancher; sister-in law, Bette Hancher; sisters, Mary Gernsback and Sue Jakimetz; grandson, Matthew Matheny
He is survived by wife Jean Hancher of Calera, Oklahoma, daughters; Debby Boyd and husband Allan of Blue, Oklahoma, Tamela Townsend and husband Chris of Calera; Oklahoma, Son, Bryan Matheny of Calera, Oklahoma; Brothers, Mike Hancher and wife Helen of Central City, Pennsylvania, Paul Hancher and wife Betty of New Port Richey, Florida, George Hancher, Jr. of McMurry, Pennsylvania, Pete Hancher and wife Donna of Margate, Florida, Frank Hancher and wife Madelyn of Columbia Station, Ohio; Sisters, Ann Albert of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Helen Shima of Central City, Pennsylvania, Sylvia Chasar and husband John of Rootstown, Ohio, Sonia Flanigan of Laurel, Maryland; Grandchildren, Jennifer Davis of Blue, Oklahoma, Jason Boyd of Paola, Kansas, Cedar Harwood of Blue, Oklahoma, Taylor Boyd of Blue, Oklahoma, Christen, Cody and Cejae Townsend of Calera, Oklahoma, Kimberly and Kristina Matheny of California; Great Grandchildren, Kylan Haddox of Calera, Oklahoma and Kayleigh Harwood of Blue, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday January 03, 2006 at First Christian Church in Durant. Rev. Randa Norman and Rev. Rick Connelly will officiate.
Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Calera. Serving as pallbearers are John Strange, James West, Marvis Reynolds, Micah Stephens, James Hale, Charles Kelly and Bobby Brown all being from the Civil Engineering Public Works Naval Air Station Reserve Base in Ft. Worth Texas.
Family will receive friends at their home from 6-9. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church 301 N. 3rd Ave Durant, OK 74701 or Victory Hospice 1305 N. 16th Ave Durant, OK 74701.
