Katie Shipman Downs

Katie Downs a resident of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away at her home on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the age of 80 years 9 months and 13 days. She was born to James David and Katy (Venable) Shipman in Durant, Oklahoma on Saturday, September 17, 1932. Katie Shipman married Ervin Jack Downs in Durant, Oklahoma.

Katie was a member of the Richland Church of the Nazarene in Yukon, Oklahoma. She graduated from the Durant High School in 1950. Katie worked for the Oklahoma City Schools. Katie loved to work with her hands quilting and sewing, she especially enjoyed painting on her quilts and doillies. She had a friendly nature and enjoyed being with people but she considered her family her greatest blessing.

Mrs. Downs is survived by her daughters, Peggy Roberts of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Glinda Ward and husband Steve of Warr Acres, Oklahoma; son, Earl Downs and wife Debbie of Del City, Oklahoma; brothers, James Shipman and wife Pat of Greenville, Texas, Donald Shipman and wife Rayanne of Cartwright, Oklahoma and Carl Shipman of Cartwright, Oklahoma; 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Downs was preceded in death by her parents, James and Kate Shipman; husband, Ervin Jack Downs; son, Monty Lynn Downs; daughter, Connie Gaylene Thaxton; brothers, Alvin, Blane, Lane, Calvin and Zearl.

A Funeral Service in her honor will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Holmes Coffey Murray Chapel in Durant, Oklahoma with Rev. John Heath officiating. Interment will follow at the Rosehill Cemetery in Calera, Oklahoma. Serving as pallbearers will be Katie’s grandsons.
