Emogene K. Smith of Durant, Oklahoma passed from this life on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the age of 93 years, 7 months and 8 days. She was born on Thursday, October 11, 1917 in Caddo, Oklahoma to Cal and Mary (Owens) Jackson. Emogene married Harold Smith on June 15, 1938 in Caddo, Oklahoma.

She was a member of the Church of Christ and was very active in church activities. Mrs. Smith loved playing scrabble and doing cross word puzzles. Like many of her generation, Emogene Kathryn Jackson Smith grew up, married, and reared a family in challenging times; but her life, guided by an innate intelligence, strong work ethic, and commitment to family, church, and friends, was characterized by a sense of humor, positive outlook, and strong aptitude for games. A daughter, sister, wife, mother, and aunt, she was on occasion also nurse, babysitter, and tutor. In recent years, she enjoyed her association with youngsters in Thursday School at the Seventh Street Church of Christ. Her life ended this week as it started, in the Durant-Caddo area, where she felt most connected. From the late 1940’s to the 1980’s, she also made a home in several places in Texas, mostly Plains and Houston, for her family.

Her survivors include sons, Harold Smith of Sacramento, California, Larry Smith of Conroe, Texas, Jimmie Smith of Durant, Oklahoma and Calvin Smith of Waco, Texas; 12 Grandchildren; 4 Great-Grandchildren; Sister, Lucille Brimage of Durant, Oklahoma; Brother, Otis Jackson of Wayne, Oklahoma; Brother-in-law, J.P. Smith of Snyder, Texas.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Cal and Mary Jackson; husband, Harold Smith; daughter, Zelda Camp; and son-in-law, Jimmy Camp.
