Leonard Delton Smith, age 87, of Hendrix, Oklahoma passed away at Texoma Medical Center, Denison, Texas, on Friday, December 26, 2008.

Mr. Smith was born in Greenville, Texas, on May 19, 1921, to Albert Smith and Hattie Norris Smith.

He married Johanna Smith on December 21, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas.

He lived thirty six years in Bryan County, moving here from Lewisville, Texas.

Mr. Smith was a doctor of veterinarian medicine, graduating from Texas A & M. He was employed by USDA.

He served his country in the Army during the Korean War.

He founded the Lewisville Saddle Club in 1961 and served as the first president of the club. He was a member of the Oklahoma Equestrian Pale Riders Association and president of the North American Pale Ride conference.

He served under Oklahoma Governor Nigh's Recreational Board.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of the home, Johanna, two sons, Leonard Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas and Wayne Allen and wife Mary of Kenefic and one daughter, Jo Ann and husband Eddie Blackeyer of Lewisville, Texas, brother, Earnest Smith of Kemp and sister, Edna Morrison and husband Vernon of Portaley, New Mexico, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Twylia Smith of Kemp, and brother-in-law, Happy Mortenson of Bells, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hattie Smith, three brothers and one sister.

Family visitation was held on Saturday, December 27, 2008, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at American Funeral Service, 107 N. Burney, Colbert, Oklahoma.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, December 28, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. at Kemp Cemetery, Kemp, Oklahoma with Doug Lott officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oklahoma Equestrian Pale Riders Scholarship Fund, in care of Ann McFarland P.O. 724 Harrah, Oklahoma 73045.
