Anna Stephens passed away quietly in her sleep on July 12, 2009 at the age of 95. She had been a resident of Durant most of her life until 2001 when she moved to Wichita Falls, Texas to be near her daughters. She was born in Gilmer, Texas on January 25, 1914. She was the daughter of James Thomas Wright and Ebbie Grinder Wright. Anna married the love of her life, George A. Stephens on September 27, 1930 in Gould Oklahoma. Together they raised their 5 children.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Ruth Anderson and husband Ed of Wichita Falls, Texas, Julia Ann (Judy) and husband Walter of Iowa Park, Texas, one son Paul A.(Buddy) Stephens and wife Natoma of Tulsa Oklahoma, one sister Laverna Satterfield of Durant, one sister in law, Ouita Wright of Armstrong, 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 husbands George Stephens, Earl Patton and David Lambert, 2 daughters, Mary Luetta Wright and Barbara Shelton, one grandson Tony Farr, one granddaughter Sandy Gifford, 4 brothers Daniel Wright, Edgar Wright, Walter Wright and Julius (Jude) Wright, 2 sisters, Ola Cooper and Cora Dell Box.

Anna was a nurse and started her career at the old Durant Hospital in 1947 and retired from Bryan Memorial Hospital in 1979. She loved to "doctor" any animals or birds that she found sick or injured and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She also loved to garden and can the fruits and vegetables that she raised. After the death of her last husband, she told her children that she had lived with the Stephens name most of her life and though both other husbands were very good men, she felt that she wanted to live out the remainder of her life and be buried under the name of the father of her children, and the love that she never got over, so she had her name legally changed back to Stephens. Anna was a long time member of the Abundant Life Temple.

Services will be held there at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, July 18, 2009 with Pastor Tim Cox officiating. Family and friend visitation will be at Coffey Murray Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. July 17th. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Durant. Pall bearers are grandsons, Phil Hudson, David Carender, Brad Stephens, Paul Groves, Kenneth Wheeler, and Mark Jeter. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
