A service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Abundant Life Temple for John “J.C.” Cyrus Grider, 83, Durant, who peacefully joined his wife in heaven on Friday, January 14, 2011, in Calera, Oklahoma. Bishop Randell Drake and Rev. Tim Cox will officiate. He was born January 25, 1927 in Kusa, OK. to Victor “Jack” Delilis and Della (Bobbit) Grider. He married Irene Bardwell (known as one of the Bardwell twins) on June 8, 1946, in Sherman, TX.

He was a retired contractor and a member of Abundant Life Temple since it’s beginning. He helped build the church and rebuilt it after 2 fires. He loved going to church, playing his fiddle, being with family and loved to laugh and joke around. He was known for his chili at many church functions. He was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was loved by all his Sunday School boys! He loved to introduce them as “This is one of my Sunday School boys! I helped raise him but that year I had a crop failure!” which showed his love of humor. He was a Gideon, Deacon and Board Member and a member of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International for years. He built hundreds of homes and owned several businesses during his years in business. He loved to help people and never wanted thanks for it.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, his parents and brothers J.R., Tom, S.J., Bill and sister Dorothy.

He is survived by daughters Barbara Kramer and husband Tommy, Durant, Vicki Thorpe and husband Jim, Durant, Donna McCurdy and husband Jack, Yukon, OK, Markita Rawlings and husband Mark, Durant; sister Wanda Weir Austin, TX; grandsons Keith Gray and Chad Gray, Durant, John Thorpe, Allen, TX, Dr. Richard Thorpe, South Lake, TX, Pete Rawlings, McKinney, TX, Shaun Rawlings, Nashville, TN; granddaughters Kaci Byford and Kiffany McCurdy, Yukon, OK, Brittni Rawlings, Durant; Monica Schafer, Brighton, CO, Amy Allen, Tulsa, OK, and Kim Sutter, Olathe, KS; and 13 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Family hour will be from 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be made to Abundant Life Temple of Durant. Holmes- Coffey-Murray Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
