Betty Dennis Engles, 91, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017, at her residence in The Laurels of Highland Creek in Charlotte, North Carolina. Betty was born on November 26, 1925 in Hamburg, Iowa to the late Herbert and Helen Dennis.
She met her future husband, Earl Engles, at Southeastern University. They married on March 19, 1945, in Fall River, Massachusetts and were married for 63 years until Earl’s death on November 18, 2008.
Betty was a homemaker who was active in the lives of she and Earl’s three children as well as the First United Methodist Church and the philanthropic educational organization, P.E.O. Betty was recognized at a recent NC state P.E.O. convention as being a “Golden Girl”, as she had been a member of P.E.O. for 65 years. Education was always a passion for Betty. When her youngest child was in middle school, Betty began working part-time as a teacher’s aide, helping children who were having difficulty with reading. Betty enjoyed playing bridge, reading and sewing, but cooking and baking were her passions. A self-taught cook, Betty went on to be a six-time Pillsbury Bake-Off finalist – two of those times, she was one of the top three prize winners.
She is survived by her three children, their spouses and two granddaughters: Denise (Engles) Wall and her husband, David, of Dallas, Texas; Leif Franklin Engles and his wife, Lisa, of Novi, Michigan; and, Deanna (Engles) Wolz and her husband, Steve, of Charlotte, North Carolina; granddaughter Elizabeth Wright Engles of Novi, Michigan and granddaughter, Andrea Engles Meyer, and her husband Sean, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Betty will be laid to rest beside her husband, Earl, in the Highland Cemetery.
