Stanley Sullivan Durham passed away in Corpus Christi on November 26, 2018 at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness. Born to Helen Thompson Durham and Dr. Curtis Sullivan Durham on January 24, 1937 in Fort Worth, Stanley lived the majority of his life in his hometown before retiring to the Gulf Coast - Port Aransas and most recently Corpus Christi. He married Stella Ann (Sprouls) Durham June 5, 1992.
In his youth, Stanley attended Arlington Heights High School and graduated from Allen Military Academy in 1955. He played football at the University of Texas and was a member of Kappa Sigma before completing his bachelors degree in economics from Texas Christian University in 1961. It was there he served in the ROTC program and subsequently in the 314th MP Reserves and the Air Force Reserves.
Known for his kind heart and love of life, Stanley was an avid sportsman, having won accolades as a Junior Golf and Sailing Champion and boxing in the Golden Gloves. His love of flying was begun in the Jaycee Pilot Training Program. Many years in his childhood were spent sailing on Eagle Mountain Lake in the Junior Sailing Program at the Fort Worth Boat Club.
His first job after college was spent working as a roustabout and oil rigs in Louisiana for the family oil and gas business, Westbrook Thompson. In later years he was a small business owner including a roofing and construction company.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Sprouls Durham of Corpus Christi, Texas, his daughters Ginger Young and her husband Bob of Tyler, Texas, Libby Tilley of Fort Worth, Texas, and grand-daughter, Olivia Young of Tyler, Texas; brother David Durham of Fort Worth, Texas, step daughter Retha Cable and husband Ruben Lerma of Corpus Christi, Texas, step son Gilbert W. Cable and wife Pam, their daughter, Marcela of Aledo, Texas, and numerous cousins. The family would like to acknowledge the attentive care Stanley received from his loyal caretaker, Diana Gomez.
Family hour for Stanley Durham will be Thursday November 29, 2018 from 6:00-7:00PM at Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. Graveside services will be Friday, November 30, 2018 at Highland Cemetery Chapel in Durant, Oklahoma at 10:00AM with Brother John Breon officiating.
