James T. Davis, Jr., of Durant, was born in Durant, Oklahoma on Monday, August 31, 1931 to James T. Davis, Sr. and Ruth (Freeman) Davis. He departed this life on Wednesday, June 04, 2008 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mr. James T. Davis, Jr., also known by the nicknames Dolly and Hawker, was a lifelong of Durant. James graduated from Durant High School in 1949. In 1959 he graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State Teachers College with a Bachelors degree in business.
James served in the Army National Guard from 1947-1976. He was in the 180th Infantry and also in the mobilized 45th Infantry to Korea in 1950. He served on the Oklahoma National Guard pistol team for many years and was also in the group “The Governors Top 20” as being a top shooter. James retired from the military as a Command Sergeant Major.
He also worked for the post office for 31 years retiring in November of 1990. Mr. Davis also owned and operated Platter Flats Fishing Camp from 1955-58. James married Ann (Morrison) on September 23, 1955 in Sherman, Texas.
James was preceded in death by his parents James and Ruth (Freeman) Davis; wife Ann Davis; son Jamie Davis III; and sister Jan Ruth Kendrick.
Mr. Davis is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Anne Bryant and husband David of Garland, Texas; sister Joan K. Larkins and husband B.G. of Denison, Texas; granddaughter Anne Keeling and husband Robby of Durant, Oklahoma; granddaughter Ashley Lappin and husband Michael of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; granddaughter Mandy Dawn Davis of Portland, Oregon; grandson Devin James Davis of Portland, Oregon; granddaughter Madeline Rose Davis of Portland, Oregon; great granddaughter Lani Grace Lappin of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, June 09, at Dalton-Holmes Funeral Home Chapel with Buddy Morrison officiating. The family visitation period will be at Dalton-Holmes Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma with Charles Marion Hosey, John Freeman Hosey, J.D. Kendrick, Sam Morrison, John Rich and Rick Morrison serving as pallbearers and Ernest Gobert serving as a honorary pallbearer.
