Sally Clark, a beacon of joy and generosity, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, at the age of 93 in Durant, Oklahoma. She was born on February 25, 1931, in Wirt, Oklahoma, to Leo T. and Nellie A. (Smith) Skinner. Her early years in Wirt laid the foundation for a life of achievement and service.
Sally excelled academically, graduating as Salutatorian from Dundee High School, where she also showcased her talents as a majorette. Her pursuit of education led her to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education.
On June 11, 1949, Sally married her childhood sweetheart, Herbert H. Clark, in Gainesville, Texas. Their union was one of deep love and partnership, and together they raised a family that would be the center of Sally's world. She balanced her role as a devoted mother with a successful career, initially serving as the secretary for the vice president of academic affairs at Southeastern under Dr. Sturch. Sally's warmth and welcoming presence earned her the affectionate title of "the face of Southeastern." Her creativity shone through in her later role in public relations, where she excelled in designing and decorating for events. Sally also taught ESL classes, sharing her love of language and culture with others.
Her compassion extended beyond her immediate community when she took in a Vietnam refugee towards the end of the war and maintained that connection throughout her life. Sally's involvement in various organizations reflected her diverse interests and commitment to service. She was a member of the Fortnightly Group for 50 years, the P.E.O. in the DJ Chapter, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and a steadfast member of the First Baptist Church Durant for 63 years. She also served on the church Search Committee and was instrumental in bringing Ken Bartholomew to First Baptist where he has served for over 21 years.
Sally’s musical talents were a gift to many, as she performed in a family quartet with her husband Herb and her in-laws throughout Carter County, sang duets with Herb up until a week before his passing, and sang soprano in the church choir. She found joy in singing, playing the piano, and painting, often sharing these passions with those around her. Her commitment to church and fellowship was instilled in her children, whom she loved dearly and always made a priority.
She had a zest for life that was evident in her love for travel, with an African safari being her most cherished adventure, followed closely by a profound trip to Jerusalem where she enjoyed “walking with Jesus”. Sally's life was one of constant motion, always ready to embark on a new adventure or lend a helping hand. Her joy was infectious, her complaints few, and her generosity knew no bounds. She will be remembered for the bags full of goodies she loved to share, her radiant smile, and the love she poured into every aspect of her life.
Sally's legacy is carried on by her loving family, including her son Kelly Clark and wife Debbie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and her cherished grandchildren: Petty Officer 1st Class Ryan Clark of Kingsbay, Georgia, Traci Clark of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jimmy Tarrant of Mustang, Oklahoma, and Jason Tarrant. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends, including Rosy Monroy, her gardener, and Barbara Dowdy, her housekeeper, who were not only helpers in her home but also dear companions.
Preceding Sally in death were her parents, Leo and Nellie Skinner, her beloved husband of 64 years, Herb Clark, her son Roger Clark, her brother James Skinner, and her sisters Era Fulton and Marie McGee.
