Bernita Brumley Bowen went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 28, 2015. Bernita was born in Durant, Oklahoma, on October 2, 1940, to Roy and Pearl (Skaggs) Brumley.
While studying music at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Bernita met her husband, Douglas Durwood Bowen, and married on June 1, 1963.
As a minister’s wife, she served with her husband for over 30 years in Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. Bernita sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school and ministered to shut-ins and nursing home residents. She also taught music and special education to public school students.
Bernita enjoyed reading, sewing, trying new recipes, gardening, canning, playing piano, and spending time with family. In 2008, she and Douglas moved to Altus, Oklahoma, to live with their daughter and followed the family in 2011 to Oklahoma City.
She is survived by one son, Barry Bowen of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Amy Keith and her husband, Russ of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Sara Casperson and her husband, Russell, Mitchell Keith, and Emily Keith, all of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Freda Smith and her husband, Marvin of Neosho, Missouri, and Rudene Phelps of Dennis, Texas; two brothers, Huel Brumley and his wife, Sue of Durant, Oklahoma, and Quentis Brumley and his wife, Sue of Kingston, Oklahoma; and a host of other family members and friends.
Bernita was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Douglas Bowen.
Family Hour will be from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. A funeral service in honor of her memory will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church Armstrong (14 Main St.) with Pastor Monty Wood officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Durant. Huel Brumley, Quentis Brumley, Rick Campo, W.C. Daniel, Mitchell Keith, and Russ Keith will serve as pallbearers.
