Dortha Dean Rains passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024, at the age of 98 in Sherman, Texas. She was born on December 7, 1925, in Caddo, Oklahoma, to Delbert F. and Clara Eathel (Vest) Speers. Her life was a testament to the values of family, and hard work.
Dortha's nurturing spirit led her to a fulfilling career as a nurse's aide, where she touched the lives of many with her gentle care and dedication. Her hands were rarely still, as she found solace and joy in reading, solving word search puzzles, and crocheting blankets for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. Each stitch was a symbol of her generous spirit and her desire to bring comfort to those in need.
In her personal life, Dortha found love and companionship with her beloved husband, Leo Rains, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a family rooted in love. Her legacy lives on through her children: Rhonda Allen of Durant, Oklahoma; Diane Gastrell and her husband Greg of Vicksburg, Mississippi; Suzie Winn and her husband JC of Benton, Arkansas; Tony Rains and his wife Cathy of Sherman, Texas; and Kelly Rains of Bennington, Oklahoma.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott Allen, Brian Allen and wife Angela, Marc Scott and wife Anita, Kylie Zumbro and husband Cody, Samuel Gastrell, Leigha Abbott and husband Stacy, Jessica Baxter and husband Sonny, Aaron Rains and wife Heather, Ryan Kennon and wife Laura, Courtney Sinclair and husband Eric, Makenzie Morrow and husband Blake, Lexi Rains and fiance Colby, Jesse Durham and wife Haven, and Hannah Percell and husband Jayden, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Dortha was the last surviving sibling of her family, preceded in death by her parents Delbert and Clara Speers, her husband Leo Rains, her brother Winfred Speers, and her sister Eunice Mitchell, and her son-in-law Louie Allen.
Family and friends will gather at her family hour from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Armstrong Baptist Church with Monty Wood officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Scott Allen, Brian Allen, Marc Scott, Samuel Gastrell, Aaron Rains, and Ryan Kennon. Honorary pallbearers will be Jesse Durham, Eric Sinclair, Cody Zumbro, Stacy Abbott, Sonny Baxter, and Blake Morrow. Dortha will be laid to rest at Gethsemane Cemetery in Caddo following her funeral service.
