Dr. Jack Landy Robinson of Durant, Oklahoma, passed away on February 11, 2011. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in Durant. Reverend Nancy Taylor and Reverend Jim Shroyer will officiate the service. Chancellor Glen D. Johnson will deliver the eulogy.

Family hour will be 6:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday, February 14, 2011, at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home Chapel in Durant.

Jack Landy Robinson of Durant, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, February 11, 2011 in Durant, Oklahoma, at the age of 71 years, 1 month, 5 days. He was born January 6, 1940 in Durant, to Holland & Elmer (Taylor) Robinson. Dr. Robinson was raised on a dairy farm near Bokchito, Oklahoma, and graduated from Bokchito High School in 1958. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, with a double major in chemistry and mathematics, from Southeastern State College in 1962. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma in 1966. He joined the faculty at Southeastern in 1966 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. During his 42-year tenure, Dr. Robinson served as a Professor of Chemistry, Chair of the Physical Sciences Department, Director of Institutional Research and Planning, Director of Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program, Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Graduate Dean, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Special Assistant to the President. Dr. Robinson’s career highlights included teaching and inspiring bright young men and women who wanted to pursue careers in the sciences or related medical fields, as well as establishing and directing the Southeastern Honors Program, and co-founding the benchmark freshman orientation program. He was a major benefactor to the scientific area by writing and procuring numerous grants for research and equipment. Dr. Robinson was the driving force and major contributor to Southeastern’s program review and assessment process, which has been recognized by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education as a model for the state of Oklahoma. He was selected Teacher of the Year by the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity in 1970, named Outstanding Educator of America in 1972 and 1974, and was a co-recipient of a Certificate of Recognition from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Board of Regents of Oklahoma Colleges named Dr. Robinson Professor Emeritus of Chemistry in 2000. The Southeastern Alumni Association honored Dr. Robinson with the Distinguished Former Faculty Award in 2009. His volunteer service included serving as consultant-evaluator for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA); Accreditation Review Council of NCA, and chair on the MBRS national subcommittee that reviewed grant applications. Dr. Robinson was very active in his church life, serving various leadership positions in the congregation, including Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, and lay-minister. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling with Sharon to visit grandchildren, collecting and photographing windmills, and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Holland Robinson of Bokchito, and his son, Jon Mark Robinson of Durant.

He is survived by his wife Sharon of Durant; son Jeff and wife Valerie of Norman, OK; son Justin of Mead, OK; sister SuZanne and husband Charles Akins of Bokchito; brother John Mike and wife Pat of Durant; brother Joe David of Bokchito; father-in-law Tommy and mother-in-law Janet Tompkins of Irving, TX; brother-in-law Wayne and wife Linda McMeans of Colleyville, TX; sister-in-law Diane and husband Gary Kreger of Bennington; step-daughter Dr. Gena and husband Dr. Rhys Strasia of Amarillo, TX; step-son George and wife Renee Berish of Manhattan, KS; and grandchildren Taylor and Cameron Robinson of Norman, OK; Olivia and Luke Strasia of Amarillo, TX; and Reagan Joy Berish of Manhattan, KS; and special friend J.R. Adkins of Mead, OK.

Interment will be at the Bokchito Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. Ernest Sturch, Professor Arnold Walker, Dr. Rick Wright, Dr. Don Collier, Dr. Jerry Polson, Dr. Gordon Eggleton, Dr. Chris Sturch, Dr. Larry Minks, Dr. Doug McMillan, and Dr. Bryon Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be former students of the MBRS program at Southeastern, and friends Dr. Shannon McCraw, Tom Marcum, Greg Phillips, Brian Campbell, Tim Boatmun, and Dr. Jason Smotherman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southeastern Foundation (Dr. Jack L. Robinson Memorial Fund), PMB 4187, Durant, OK 74701.
