Harold Chitwood, a longtime respected resident of Bennington, Oklahoma passed away in Durant, Oklahoma on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the age of 93 years 4 months and 26 days. He was born in Booth, Arkansas to Louis and Leona (Gable) Chitwood on January 20, 1921. Harold married Louise Barker in Ft. Smith, Arkansas on Saturday, June 5, 1948.
Harold proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII from 1942-1945 on the USS Idaho. He returned home and completed a bachelors degree from Oklahoma State University. He was a rancher in Bennington, Oklahoma where he made his home and raised his family. He was the Vocational Agriculture Teacher at the Bennington School for 35 years before retiring in 1984. Harold enjoyed sitting quietly by a pond fishing and taking trips with his Navy buddies and VoAg friends. He especially enjoyed sharing stories and information with his fellow farmers.
Mr. Chitwood is survived by his daughter, Anna Louise (Cookie) Jestis of Cartwright, Oklahoma; grandchildren, David Gene Jestis of Cartwright, Oklahoma, Theresa Comeaux and husband Chris of Cartwright, Oklahoma and Kathryn Ann Bray and husband Todd of Broken Bow, Oklahoma; 5 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Mr. Chitwood was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Leora Chitwood; wife, Louise Chitwood; daughter, Evelyn Kaye Feazle; grandson, Danny Jestis, Jr.; 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
The family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the FFA Foundation-Harold Chitwood Scholarship 1500 W. 7th St. Stillwater, Oklahoma 74704.
A service in honor of his memory will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 21, 2014 at The Bennington School Gymnasium in Bennington, Oklahoma with L.V. Watkins and Wes Watkins officiating. Interment will follow at Bennington Cemetery with his nephews serving as pallbearers; Don Chitwood,Bill Chitwood, Steve Chitwood, John Chitwood and Len hitwood.
