A graveside service for Mary Lou Durham, 87, of Okeene will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Okeene.She attended school in Lawrence, Kan., and received a degree in psychology from the University of Kansas. She served as a WAVE in the Navy during World War II and rose to the position of lieutenant junior grade.
She married James E. Durham May 20, 1945, in Lawrence. They made their home in Okeene in 1946, where she helped to organize the Child Study Club and served as charter president. They moved to Cleveland in 1947, where she took graduate courses in psychology at Baldwin-Wallace College. They returned to Okeene in 1967, and she became active in the Child Study Club, receiving a lifetime membership. She also served on Okeene Library Board, State Library Association and Home Economics Advisory Board. In 1975, she attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weath-erford, receiving a degree in elementary education. She then served as a substitute teacher in Okeene schools. She later worked as a secretary and public relations officer at State Guaranty Bank. She helped establish the Gene Miles Basketball Scholarship, Pat Kellner Home Economics Scholarship, Loretta Greb SGB Scholarship and James E. Durham Jr. Memorial Scholarship at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University. She also was instrumental to the bank’s many programs of community support under the Federal Community Reinvestment Act.
In 1995, she was a recipient of the Okeene Chamber of
Commerce Distingished Citizen Award. In 2001, she and her husband were
chosen Okeene Volunteers of the Year.
Surviving are one son, William H. Durham of Palo Alto,
Calif.; one daughter, Diane Durham Sublett of Okeene; and six
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, one son and one grandson.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Okeene Hospital Foundation, Okeene School Foundation Fund, the James E. Durham Jr. Memorial Scholarship at OSU or American Cancer Society.
